The overwintering of the invasive mosquito species Aedes koreicus in the Czech Republic as a prerequisite for its establishmentSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Oldřich Šebesta, Martin Janouch, Kristína Mravcová, Silvie Šikutová, Ivo Rudolf

Hygiena 2024, 69(3):97-100 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1867

At the end of March 2024 in Borovany in South Bohemia in a garden pond in the vicinity of a private house a number of larvae (15 individuals per dm3) and some pupae were found which were later, based on hatched imagery, identified as the invasive mosquito species Aedes koreicus. Given the early finding of larvae, their number and age, we can conclude that this is the first record of the invasive genus Aedes overwintering in our area.

The content of Ca and Mg in drinking water and its impact on the arterial stiffness of inhabitants of Slovak populationSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Stanislav Rapant, Veronika Cvečková, Patrik Čermák

Hygiena 2024, 69(3):93-96 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1858

Arterial stiffness is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which are the most common cause of death in developed countries. Based on measurements of arterial stiffness in inhabitants supplied with soft drinking water (100 respondents) and hard drinking water (100 respondents), a significant difference in pulse wave velocity (PWVao), arterial age, and the difference between arterial and actual age (Δ age) was found. In the respondents consuming soft drinking water, PWVao was 1.9 m.s-1 higher, arterial age was 23 years higher, and Δ age was 14.5 years higher. The respondents originally consuming...

Since 1994, the National Institute of Public Health has been entrusted with guaranteeing the Environmental Health Monitoring System. This year (2024), we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of this system. The goal of the system is to achieve a systematic and transparent assessment of environmental and health effects that affect the Czech population. Dietary exposure plays an important role. The monitoring of dietary exposure requires the knowledge of the national food consumption at an individual level, determination of important foods in the usual diet, usual culinary preparations, combination into composite samples for laboratory...

Medical waste – current situation and the transition to a circular economyREVIEW PAPERS

Jana Loosová, Julie Mokrá

Hygiena 2024, 69(3):84-89 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1860

The analysis and subsequent visualisation of changes in waste production related to different levels of territorial units reflect the basic trends of changes in the structure of healthcare provision between 2020 and 2021. The issue of risks arising from healthcare waste management is shifting towards a circular economy at the global level in terms of managing material flows in the specific environment of healthcare and its safety requirements. The role of the public health authority in this matter resides in supervision, the content of which can be practically structured into the form of checklists enabling to find safe ways of introducing the principles...

The obesity epidemic in adults and possible preventive measures in the Czech RepublicREVIEW PAPERS

Dana Müllerová, Barbora Macková, Marie Nejedlá

Hygiena 2024, 69(1):29-37 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1852

Obesity is a chronic, progressive and recurrent disease that leads to a range of other health complications that impair quality of life and shorten its duration. From the pathophysiological perspective, it is the proliferation of adipose tissue in the body and its subsequent dysfunction, which contributes to immuno-metabolic alterations and damage to other organs and tissues. The increasing prevalence of this disease over the last 40 years has led to its current worldwide pandemic, which has not yet been successfully controlled. Obesity is thus also becoming an economic problem that hinders future development prosperity. The obesity pandemic is the...

Objectives: The assessment of the level of work-related stress and quality of life among nurses in the Czech Republic throughout the utilisation of available standardised questionnaire methods during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted during the pandemic year of 2021. A questionnaire was administered to 450 nurses. Two standardised questionnaires were employed: Meister's questionnaire for subjective assessment of work-related mental load and the SF 36 questionnaire for quality of life. Results: Through the analysis of the level of mental strain, it became apparent that individual scales of mental...

Matyáš Fošum, Marie Nakládalová

Hygiena 2024, 69(1):18-22 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1857

In the COVID-19 period, there was a reduction in the number of occupational health check-ups in the Czech Republic, which represents a significant intervention in the occupational health protection system. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of these measures and the possibility of their application in the future from the perspective of occupational health professionals. The study, which is part of a broader whole, used the consensus of the members of the expert group with their focus on the assessment of fitness for work and the recognition of diseases as occupational diseases. Subsequent analysis of the responses provided recommendations...

Fountains and other urban water features are not designed for bathing, but many of them encourage direct contact with the water. Individual objects, however, are designed with varying degrees of erudition in water hygiene and therefore also with different modification of treatment technologies, water recirculation and operating instructions. Methodological Guidelines for the Safe Operation of Interactive Urban Water Features, Water Playgrounds and Water Parks was issued last year. It is not mandatory, but it was created as guidance to increase safety and possibly reduce health risks related to their use. The Guidelines were created primarily on the...

As a result of the amended Public Health law, a team was dispatched to the Chrudim water company to assess the systemic risks posed from water supplied by this company. Risk analysis yielded a rapid solution to eliminating relatively easily solvable risks. A priority was the immediate resolution of unacceptable risk factors, or their transformation into acceptably manageable risks. A number of investments, both annual and longterm, were approved by the owners of the company.

Věra Krmašová, Joanna Linkiewicz

Hygiena 2023, 68(4):122-124 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1845

Not only the lay public but also professional public often confuses disciplines of physiotherapy and massage therapy even though there are clear differences both in professional content and in the legal framework and education system. Physiotherapy is a medical discipline that deals with diagnosis and therapy of functional disorders of the locomotor system. Massage is a service and includes a set of massage procedures which should result in eased muscles and general relaxation. This article attempts to clearly define both fields and their differences and to set the limits which a massage therapy provider should not exceed in practice.
