Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of significant contaminants in the occupational and living environment. In addition to the inhalation route of exposure in the occupational environment, there is also significant the dermal route of exposure. Existing experimental data on the intensity and rate of penetration of these substances into systemic circulation are still limited. The presented paper is focused on methodological and interpretative issues of trans-epidermal absorption of PAHs in vitro. In this study, we assessed the intensity (Flux) and rate (Lag time) of penetration of naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene...

Current human biomonitoring - Iodine status in Czech population

Lenka Hanzlíková, Lenka Sochorová, Lucie Kašparová, Alena Fialová, Růžena Kubínová, Milena Černá

Hygiena 2018, 63(3):84-88 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1624

Iodine is one of the essential elements and its deficiency has significant health consequences. The optimum urinary iodine level is in range 100-199 µg/L, median value from 100 to 299 µg/L, were considered satisfactory and characterize the population without iodine deficiency, as set by the World Health Organization. As part of biological monitoring, iodine was monitored in 2015 in the adult population (blood donors, N = 234) and 2016 in the children population (5 and 9 years, N = 400). The optimum urinary iodine level (100-199 µg/L) was found in 42% of study subjects (adult). 34% of study subjects had lower urinary iodine levels. The...

Selected environmental risk factors of inflammatory bowel diseases

Jana Diabelková

Hygiena 2018, 63(3):99-104 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1585

The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease has increased in recent years, but the exact cause of the disease is not yet clear and therefore we do not know of any reliable way of prevention. Described is current knowledge about the role and influence of selected risk factors related to the development, relapse and progression of inflammatory bowel disease. More specifically, it deals with potential risk factors such as hygiene, smoking, environment, sanitation, industrialization and socio-economic status, air pollution, water, but also the role of intestinal microbioma, infections, antibiotic use, and stress and sleep. Highlighted is the need to clarify...

REPORT FROM PRACTICE

Is it possible to reduce occupational exposure of nurses to cytotoxic drugs?

Šárka Kozáková, Lenka Doležalová

Hygiena 2018, 63(3):105-106 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1626

Long-term routine occupational exposure of health care workers handling cytotoxic drugs (CDs) poses a risk due to the known hazardous (genotoxic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic) properties of these agents. The safety rules applicable to the preparation of CDs in the Czech Republic are enshrined in legislation. Aseptic preparation of CDs should be conducted in a pharmacy, in the controlled zone, in a negative pressure vertical laminar flow hood, and while wearing chemoprotective gloves. However, no safety rules for healthcare workers handling CDs outside the pharmacy, e.g. nurses or orderlies, are enshrined in legislation. In most healthcare settings,...
