The article summarizes thirty years of activity by the National Institute of Public Health in the area of systematic monitoring of the health status of the Czech population. It presents the methodology and selected results of various surveys conducted within the Population Health Monitoring System in relation to the environment. These surveys combined health questionnaires with health examinations of both adult and child respondents. This article discusses the life and work of RNDr. Josef Gabriel, CSc. (1901-1976), who devoted his work to water hygiene and spent his entire professional life at the National Institute of Public Health. In particular, the focus is placed on his contribution to the introduction of microscopic analysis of drinking water in Czechoslovakia and his research into water quality in water reservoirs and ways to improve it.

The aim of this article is to describe the role of public health authorities in assisting residents affected by flooding, particularly those who rely on private wells as their sole source of drinking water. The article summarizes the experience of regional public health authorities during the emergency response campaign and focuses on the quality of well water, highlighting the associated health risks. It emphasizes the importance of collaboration with municipalities and well owners, the need for professional well sanitation, and the critical role of public education in preventing health hazards.
