Objective: Hearing loss has a significant impact on interpersonal communication. It is a symptom that can be caused by many risk factors, including smoking. This work has aimed to determine whether there is a connection between smoking and hearing impairment and to determine the degree of association, considering variables such as gender and age. Methodology: Hearing thresholds at frequencies of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 8,000 Hz were compared using audiometry. Prevalences of hearing loss occurrence and hearing thresholds were compared according to age groups and smoking levels determined by the Brinkman index (BI). The average hearing thresholds...

Comparison of the development of selected pollutant emissions in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic in the years 2000-2018

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):12-19 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1785

Air pollution is currently considered a major public health problem responsible for increasing morbidity and mortality. Polluted air contributes to the global burden of respiratory and allergic diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia and possibly tuberculosis. Deteriorated air quality is closely linked to the amount of anthropogenic emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere. These have different origins - from industrial and energy sources, through emissions from transport to small sources from local household heating. Air pollution is a heterogeneous mixture of compounds that includes ozone, carbon monoxide,...

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):20-27 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1800

Objectives: Cytotoxic therapeutics (CT) pose a risk to healthcare professionals. Surface disinfectants are used in hospitals to prevent microbial contamination. Information about their effects on removing CT is incomplete. Our study has examined the effectiveness of selected disinfectants on CT floor contamination. Methods: According to a survey in 43 hospitals, the nine most commonly used disinfectants were selected and tested for the presence of nine CTs - cyclophosphamide (CP), ifosfamide (IF), capecitabine (CAP), sunitinib (SUN), methotrexate (MET), doxorubicin (DOX), irinotecan (IRI), paclitaxel (PX) and 5-fluorouracil (FU). Results: The most...

Risks arising from long-term interruption of drinking water supply in hospitals

Iveta Klementová, František Kožíšek

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):28-34 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1806

Any longer-term interruption of water supply in hospitals has a very adverse impact on the health care provided. This is why every hospital should develop an emergency plan for providing water as part of its emergency management. This paper describes the basic obligations of healthcare facilities in water supply, and the main causes and types of supply failures. It also lists the main risks relating to such circumstances, and the options of control and remedial measures available. Finally, it calls attention to existing tools and guidelines supporting the development of a water supply emergency plan.

SHORT COMMUNICATIONS

An unusual conference

Jaroslav Kříž

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):35-37 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1799

A conference of public health officers from the northern Bohemia region of the Czech Republic, with participants from other re-gions and institutions, was held 40 years ago in February 1982. Instead of professional issues, the programme comprised unorthodox and humorously presented themes inspired by work, life and political problems. The speeches were coloured by hyperbole, irony, fantasy and high intellect, often on the verge of political risk-taking (it was the time of the communist regime). One of the many examples: "Epidemiology will deal with human stupidity in the future. Everything indicates that it is highly contagious". A unique conference...
