Hygiena 2019, 64(2):45-51 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1705

Repeated surveys of respiratory health among Czech children conducted by the National Institute of Public Health in the past two decades revealed a higher prevalence of respiratory allergies, recurrent respiratory infections and non-specific respiratory symptoms in the Moravian-Silesian Region (MS Region) than the national average levels. In view of the substantial pollution of large areas in that region, our aim was to examine how the prevalence of allergic diseases and respiratory symptoms in children is related to spatially variable air quality. Cluster analysis (division of the region into areas differring by the characteristics of long-term air...

16 victims and 16 years for elucidating the case. A reminder of the worst Czech bathing water epidemic in Ústí nad Labem

František Kožíšek, Eva Rychlíková, Petr Pumann

Hygiena 2019, 64(2):52-58 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1708

The outbreak of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAME) occurred in Ústí nad Labem in the first half of the 1960s, where in total 16 young people (age 8 - 25) died in four clusters. Common exposure was swimming in one artificial swimming pool. Various bacteria were originally suspected as the causative infectious agent, but the true pathogen was identified not until 2 years after the outbreak. The reservoir of amoebas (cavern behind the front wall of the pool) was found even later - after another 11 years. It was not only the worst Czech outbreak relating to bathing waters in modern history, but also a unique event from a worldwide perspective due...

Cigarette plain packaging - facts and myths

Kamila Zvolská, Eva Králíková

Hygiena 2019, 64(2):60-66 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1717

A plain or generic cigarette package means a unified design without any unregulated space. The basic colour is brown-green with a dominating pictorial warning. It does not restrict the number of brands, but their names are printed in the same font, the same size and same colour. Plain packaging has been adopted in 15 countries already, being discussed in another 14. EU countries have the right to adopt plain packaging according to the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU. In the Czech Republic, cigarette boxes are regulated under a Ministry of Agriculture Decree. The costs are virtually zero for the state - the box is printed by the manufacturer....

The species Clogmia albipunctata is a tropical and subtropical representative of the order Diptera, family Psychodidae, which is gradually colonizing areas of the moderate climatic zone. There were recorded two new locations of occurance in the Zlín Region. Although it is a non-hematophagous organism, this so-called "Moth Fly" presents specific health risks also for humans. It can participate in the mechanical transmission of various pathogens, on the drain flies in the hospital environment there has been confirmed the presence of resistant species of microorganisms that play a role in the transmission of nosocomial infections. The tobacco industry has obtained a new multibillion injection: production of electronic equipment for the distribution of the very addictive drug nicotine. The growing liking for the electronic delivery systems is seen all over world, namely in developed countries. Nevertheless, is new trade sector is no obstacle for continuing the production of combustible tobacco products, which are required predominantly in medium and little developed economies.
