A tribute to our predecessors: the editors-in-chief of the Hygiena journal

Hygiena is a national professional journal focusing on traditional topics of hygiene, health protection, primary prevention of diseases and health promotion. This year's 68th volume documents the stability and importance of Hygiena, which is one of the longest-established medical journals in the Czech Republic. Its readers' and authors' favour has been greatly conduced to by the editors-in-chief - chairmen of the editorial boards. In addition to their work for the journal, they have contributed significantly to the development of public health, to the application of health protection and promotion in society and to the undergraduate and postgraduate education of public health officers. Many held important social and managerial positions in the public health sector and faculties of medicine. With this article we would like to commemorate them. The first editor-in-chief in 1952-1955, when the journal covered both public health and epidemiology, was the world-famous epidemiologist Karel Raška. The separate journal Hygiena, which changed its name slightly over the years, was headed by Karel Symon (1956-1967), Jiří Havránek (1968-1971), Jaroslav Lener (1972-2003), Jindřich Fiala (2004-2006), Jaroslav Kříž (2007-2021) and František Kožíšek (since 2022).
