Healthcare Waste and New Challenges

Hygiena 2021, 66(3):73-79 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1791
Analysis of the production and management of healthcare waste reveals trends that point to an atypical set-up of the waste market in the Czech Republic. Legislative changes will influence these trends. Specific changes from the perspective of the Regional Public Health Authorities and the operation of healthcare facilities are presented following the first introduction of the implementing Decree No 273/2021. A broader context and further challenges in the field of health care waste management in relation to sustainability and a long-term transformation to a recycling economy are also outlined.

Hygiena 2021, 66(3):80-86 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1786
Objectives: Invasive mosquito species represent a major threat to human health since they are vectors of many dangerous pathogens such as dengue, chikungunya and zika viruses, necessitating performance of routine vector surveillance. Methodology: Between 2016 and 2020 we performed mosquito monitoring targetted at invasive mosquito species in South Moravia (Břeclavsko and Znojemsko regions) using ovitraps (collection of eggs) and BG-Sentinel traps (collection of adults). Results: The invasive mosquito species Aedes albopistus was found on all study sites. Conclusion: Results indicate possible risk of future establishment of this species due to...

Andrea Bušová, Erik Dorko
Hygiena 2021, 66(3):87-93 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1787
Objective: The aim of this seroepidemiological study was to determine the current prevalence of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (B. burgdorferi s. l.) and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) among the population of Eastern Slovakia and to evaluate risk factors associated with seropositivity. Methods: Serum samples with completed questionnaires used for the risk factor analysis were obtained from 275 persons (healthy persons with possible working exposure to tick and outdoor activities and patients from different clinical departments). The set of respondents consisted of 108 (39.3%) men and 167 (60.7%) women. Sera were...

Objectives: The goal of the study was to ascertain the eventuality and extent of arsenic and toxic metal content in the hair of children living in the immediate vicinity of mining and incineration operations. Such exposure can be caused by polymetallic ores from abandoned mining complexes. Methodology: In the project of the Czech Science Foundation from 2017 to 2019 we collected a total of 260 hair samples children aged 9 years from 2 municipalities in the Sokolov coal basin and 5 from the Most coal basin. The ICP/MS and TMA analyses searched for Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sb, Sn, V, and Zn content. Sampling of hair was complemented by...

Robert Koch's postulates and contemporary evidence-based medicine
Vladimír Bencko
Hygiena 2021, 66(3):102-106 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1788
Koch's main contribution to the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM) was the formulation of his four postulates which helped to confirm the causal relationship between pathogenic microbes and infectious diseases, and in enabling credible diagnosis of such diseases through microscopy, inoculation and cultivation. A further stage in the development of EBM is represented by the Bradford Hill criteria, a group of nine principles applicable to non-transmissible diseases. The present discussion focuses on the limitations of EBM and its primary significance and use.
