Contribution to the everlasting debate: how to monitor legionellae?
Dana Baudišová, František Kožíšek
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):5-10 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1871
This paper seeks to highlight the scope of the Legionella issue and contribute to its better understanding. It explains the necessity of perceiving it in a broader context and the purpose of using the indicators Legionella spp. and Legionella pneumophila, which cannot be randomly confused or stably substituted for each other, as both have different functions. Any investigation (whether it is domestic distribution system risk assessment, an epidemiological investigation or a research study) and evaluation must be carried out with a clear objective and using analytical methods appropriately chosen for that purpose.
Chlorate – a new problem indicator in swimming pool water
František Kožíšek, Hana Jeligová, Pavla Wildová
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):11-16 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1879
In 2024, the Czech Republic amended the legislation that deals with hygiene requirements for swimming pools. One of the amendments concerned the limit of chlorate in public swimming pools and hot tubs and the obligation to monitor it. It was because more and more pool operators use sodium hypochlorite for disinfection and it was found during inspections that the concentration of its by-product – chlorate – in the pool water in some cases reaches health hazardous levels. The article introduces the conditions of the new regulation, the health risks of chlorate and the method of deriving the limit value, the requirements for chlorate in swimming...
Noise reduction action plans in practice
Pavel Junek, Dana Potužníková, Tomáš Hellmuth, Aleš Jiráska
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):17-21 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1880
In the previous article Strategic Noise Maps and Action Plans 2024 published in Hygiena 4/2024 we described the meaning of strategic noise mapping and noise reduction action plans. In this follow-up article, we would like to present specific options for proposed measures for individual noise sources and discuss their effectiveness. We will try to show the correct procedure for proposing measures in action plans and, based on our own experience, point out problematic areas. We will reflect on the importance of Action Plans and propose certain improvements that could contribute to making action plans an integral part of the policy of reducing noise pollution...
Remembering Associate Professor RNDr. Miroslav Polster, CSc.
Vladimír Ostrý, František Kožíšek
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):22-24 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1877
This year we will commemorate the 105th birth anniversary of Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Miroslav Polster, CSc. (1920-1992), a leading figure in the field of microbiology, mycotoxicology and mycology. Miroslav Polster was an extremely capable and educated expert focused primarily on the study of microfungi and their toxic products – mycotoxins (e.g. aflatoxins, cyclopiazonic acid, zearalenone). He published his research results and findings extensively and became known as a leading Czechoslovak expert in the aforementioned field. His rich professional activities are affiliated with the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Faculty of Medicine...

Extraordinary event at the Seč valley reservoir caused by massive growth of Dinoflagellates
Jana Kratochvílová, Jitka Seidlová, Jaroslav Říha
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):27-30 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1876
The Seč valley reservoir serves as a retention area during floods, as a source of drinking water and in recent decades as an important recreational area. Due to eutrophication, cyanobacterial blooms have repeatedly occurred here. In July 2024, a highly exceptional event occurred when, after heavy rains, an extreme amount of protozoa from the group of giant nematodes (Dinophyta) entered the reservoir. They then formed a coating that progressed with the flow of water through the reservoir. The phenomenon was observed for about a month. So far, freshwater Dinoflagellates (as opposed to marine Dinoflagellates) have not been found to produce toxins dangerous...
