Igo Kajaba, Aida Kajabová, Manon Genčíková, Branislav Genčík, Nora Lovászová, Vladimír Bencko, Jaroslav Kříž, Bohumil Turek, Petr Šíma, Pavel Dlouhý, Jan Ševčík

Hygiena 2020, 65(1):22-26 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1735

Presented is a review of knowledge about the development of the microbiome from birth with regard to its genetic predisposition to 2 basic factors - the way of birth and nutrition of the newborn. The close relationship of microbial development to the intestinal immune system is shown. Attention is drawn to the importance of eumicrobiosis and its preventive function in the course of metabolic processes and the prevalence of non-contagiouse diseases. A particularly serious risk of dysmicrobiosis, which is currently considered to be one of the major elements in the etiopathogenesis of many so-called civilization linked diseases, is underlined. The importance...

Minimisation of risk of exposure to mercuryREVIEW PAPERS

Katarína Kromerová, Vladimír Bencko

Hygiena 2020, 65(1):17-21 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1731

Mercury is found in the environment due to human activities or natural processes. Due to long-range atmospheric transport capacity, biotransformation into organic forms, bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food chain in combination with high toxicity, mercury has become a priority environmental contaminant, which the World Health Organization has identified as one of the ten most dangerous chemicals for public health. Mercury exposures in developed countries show significant economic costs, especially in the form of economic productivity losses. Studies have also highlighted the significant economic benefits of preventing mercury pollution...

Aims: Alcohol consumption affects not only its user but also his social environment. Consequences for the drinker are well mapped, but less attention is paid to the affected environment. Harm made to it is known as alcohol's harm(s) to others (AHTO). The AHTO approach includes a wide spectrum of harms at the individual level, in the family system, community and society. This is to provide an overview of the AHTO including typology, types of research and classification, AHTO makers, groups at higher risk and protective factors. Methods: This thesis is a review. To meet the aims, a systematic research of bibliographic databases was made. Also other information...

Health and GIS: The present situation and future options in the Czech RepublicORIGINAL ARTICLES

Jana Loosová, Jiří Šmída, Vladimír Valenta, Ondřej Kovář

Hygiena 2020, 65(1):5-9 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1739

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are currently used in a number of disciplines as effective methods of managing, analyzing, sharing and visualizing geographic data. At Regional Public Health Authorities in the Czech Republic, however, this positive trend in digitalisation of their work does not progress as intensively as in other disciplines. According to the probe, there are two objective reasons. Technical problems with the lack of appropriate technical equipment and, above all, shortcomings of personnel. Education belonging to the necessary measures to raise awareness of the advantages and opportunities of implementation of GIS methods was supported...

Options of applying GIS in practice by public health authoritiesREPORT FROM PRACTICE

Jan Beneš

Hygiena 2019, 64(4):170-173 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1728

The competence of regional public health authorities is still quite extensive even today, very often in practice there is work with the space around us, its use, various factors and their effect. Within a wide range of inspections and assessments, we obtain data that relates to different locations and spaces. And just for the purpose of working with spatial data and analyzing that data, or the monitoring of different relationships in a given space or finding out the cause of the examined problem, it is appropriate to use the so-called geographic information systems (hereinafter referred to as "GIS"). GIS experience differs across regional public health...

Historical noise burden is still an issueREVIEW PAPERS

Dana Potužníková, Tomáš Hellmuth, Aleš Jiráska, David Kresl, Lubomír Píša, Vítězslav Křivánek

Hygiena 2019, 64(4):164-169 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1724

On 30 July 2016, the Government Decree No. 272/2011 Coll., On health protection against adverse effects of noise and vibrations, became effective. The amendment in § 12 still includes the possibility of granting a correction to the so-called "old noise load" and adjusts the conditions under which a +20 dB correction can be admitted to the baseline sound pressure level A LAeq,T 50 dB. Correction to the old noise load was introduced in 2000 as an analogy to the reduction of old ecological burdens in the environment. This paper deals with the analysis of problems that the "historical noise burdens" institute brings...

Measured impacts of low emission zones on air quality changes in German cities. A lesson for the Czech RepublicREVIEW PAPERS

Marek Tögel, Roman Čampula, Libor Špička

Hygiena 2019, 64(4):154-163 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1721

Since 2013 municipalities in the Czech Republic are allowed to implement low emission zones (LEZs), which are supposed to improve air quality in urban areas. Nevertheless, no LEZs have been implemented in any Czech city yet. Many critics of the introduction NEZ, referring to some international scientific studies, point out the negligible impacts of this measure. What are the real outcomes of scientific papers then? This meta-analysis analysed 15 primary studies, which conducted empirical research of LEZs' impacts on imissions of PM10, PM1.0, soot and nitrogen oxides. According to the results of the meta-analysis, LEZs contributed...

Anti-noise measures at regional freight railway stationsREPORT FROM PRACTICE

Šimon Veleba

Hygiena 2019, 64(3):131-134 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1722

Presented is the problem of noise reduction from the operation of rail brakes at the regional freight railway station in Havlíčkův Brod. According to the state health supervision, the hygienic limits of noise have been exceeded in the protected outdoor area of buildings at night. A major source of noise in the operation of rail brakes was the sound caused by the clamping of the wheels, giving rise to intense whistling. The operator has designed and implemented effective noise prevention measures, such as the installation of passive and active anti-noise measures. The implementation of these measures reduced noise from the use of rail brakes by more...

One hundred years of modern cremation in the Czech RepublicSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

František Kožíšek

Hygiena 2019, 64(3):128-129 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1726

The article reminds of the prohibition of cremation in Christian Europe and the struggle for the reintroduction of cremation at the turn of the 20th century. In the Czech lands, the prohibition of cremation was in force until 1919 when, on the initiative of J. Kvapil, a playwright and also a then deputy, one of the shortest acts ever was passed which allowed cremation. In the same year, the Liberec crematorium was the first to be put into operation in the Czech Republic. This year, it is exactly one hundred years since the reintroduction of cremation in the Czech Republic, which now accounts for around 80% of the annual total of funerals in this country.

Jindřich Fiala, Pavlína Kaňová, Lucie Kotalová

Hygiena 2019, 64(3):117-127 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1727

Child overweight and obesity represent a major problem, in terms of health consequences, especially later in adulthood, in terms of high prevalence, and the difficulty of the solution. Obesity is usually carried on adulthood, and prevention is therefore the best way to intervene. But it requires a very comprehensive solution, a really society-wide approach, with the involvement of politics, many resorts, and individual families. The aim of the article is to review current strategies and action plans or implementation plans, namely the European Action Plan on Childhood Obesity 2014-2020, the National Action Plan on Obesity in the Health 2020 Program,...

Aim: The health status of laboratory animals affects their suitability for research, therefore it is important that each facility with laboratory animals has its own program of animal quality control. The source of the infection, however, may not only be the laboratory animals, but also on infiltration agent from the outside environment. In the framework of the animal biosecurity concept, microbiological monitoring of the environment is carried out in many foreign animal facilities. The aim of our work was to evaluate how the above-mentioned microbiological monitoring of animal environment may contribute to the Animal Health Quality Control Program....

Drahoslava Hrubá

Hygiena 2019, 64(2):72-75 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1716

The tobacco industry has obtained a new multibillion injection: production of electronic equipment for the distribution of the very addictive drug nicotine. The growing liking for the electronic delivery systems is seen all over world, namely in developed countries. Nevertheless, is new trade sector is no obstacle for continuing the production of combustible tobacco products, which are required predominantly in medium and little developed economies. From the beginning, electronic cigarettes were promoted by advertising them as a safe alternative of smoking and an effective device for smoking cessation. Such statements influence both the lay community...

Epidemiological risk: Clogmia albipunctata as a bacterial vector and causative agent of myiasisREVIEW PAPERS

Lenka Kudělková, Martin Pijáček

Hygiena 2019, 64(2):67-70 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1711

The species Clogmia albipunctata is a tropical and subtropical representative of the order Diptera, family Psychodidae, which is gradually colonizing areas of the moderate climatic zone. There were recorded two new locations of occurance in the Zlín Region. Although it is a non-hematophagous organism, this so-called "Moth Fly" presents specific health risks also for humans. It can participate in the mechanical transmission of various pathogens, on the drain flies in the hospital environment there has been confirmed the presence of resistant species of microorganisms that play a role in the transmission of nosocomial infections. Furthermore,...

Cigarette plain packaging - facts and mythsREVIEW PAPERS

Kamila Zvolská, Eva Králíková

Hygiena 2019, 64(2):60-66 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1717

A plain or generic cigarette package means a unified design without any unregulated space. The basic colour is brown-green with a dominating pictorial warning. It does not restrict the number of brands, but their names are printed in the same font, the same size and same colour. Plain packaging has been adopted in 15 countries already, being discussed in another 14. EU countries have the right to adopt plain packaging according to the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU. In the Czech Republic, cigarette boxes are regulated under a Ministry of Agriculture Decree. The costs are virtually zero for the state - the box is printed by the manufacturer....

16 victims and 16 years for elucidating the case. A reminder of the worst Czech bathing water epidemic in Ústí nad LabemREVIEW PAPERS

František Kožíšek, Eva Rychlíková, Petr Pumann

Hygiena 2019, 64(2):52-58 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1708

The outbreak of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAME) occurred in Ústí nad Labem in the first half of the 1960s, where in total 16 young people (age 8 - 25) died in four clusters. Common exposure was swimming in one artificial swimming pool. Various bacteria were originally suspected as the causative infectious agent, but the true pathogen was identified not until 2 years after the outbreak. The reservoir of amoebas (cavern behind the front wall of the pool) was found even later - after another 11 years. It was not only the worst Czech outbreak relating to bathing waters in modern history, but also a unique event from a worldwide perspective due...
