A Billion Lives: a masterpiece of propaganda by the tobacco industry
- Masarykova univerzita, Lékařská fakulta, Ústav ochrany a podpory zdraví, Brno, Česká republika
The tobacco industry has obtained a new multibillion injection: production of electronic equipment for the distribution of the very addictive drug nicotine. The growing liking for the electronic delivery systems is seen all over world, namely in developed countries. Nevertheless, is new trade sector is no obstacle for continuing the production of combustible tobacco products, which are required predominantly in medium and little developed economies. From the beginning, electronic cigarettes were promoted by advertising them as a safe alternative of smoking and an effective device for smoking cessation. Such statements influence both the lay community and specialists, in spite of that current research data about the health effects and efficacy for treatment are preliminary and inconsistent. The movie "A Billion Lives" is an example of "professional" misinformation and was presented even on the state TV.
