Noting the Absence of Nutrition Policy in the Czech RepublicSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Jaroslav Kříž

Hygiena 2009, 54(1):32-34

There are many reasons for improving nutrition habits in the Czech Republic. Nonadequate nutrition significantly influences the prevalence of many noncommunicable diseases, health care costs and economic prosperity. It is desirable to discuss and prepare a national nutrition policy or programme that reflects these facts and increases the ratio of people contributing to prevention and improving their health through adequate nutrition.

Smoking and SuicideREVIEW PAPERS

Drahoslava Hrubá

Hygiena 2009, 54(1):27-29

Current smoking is clearly associated with suicide. Although the mechanism of these associations is not well known, the most plausible explanation is that smoking is a part of the complex of risk factors that increase the risk of suicide. Smoking cessation has not been associated with suicide, although in some smokers withdraval symptoms can be manifested by depression. US regulatory agencies have stated bupropion, vareniclin and rimonabant as possible risks for suicide. More research focuses on understanding smoking and suicide is needed.

Endocrine DisruptorsREVIEW PAPERS

Drahoslava Hrubá

Hygiena 2009, 54(1):23-26

Endocrine disruptors (ECDs) involve various chemicals, such as natural and synthetic hormones, natural components in plants, pesticides, chemical used in the production of plastics and in other industries, as well as in waste. Many of them are persistent in the environment, while the others are quickly degradated and so they can exert their influence for a short time only, which however can be the critical period of development. Through their interference with the endocrine system they can cause harmful effects both in animals and humans. Endocrine disruptions initiate functional changes as consequences of exposure to chemical substances; such changes...

The aim of the project was to introduce an Allergy-Card as part of preventive medical examinations of children. This card could assist early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases and lifestyle modification. The main goal of the project was to reduce problems associated with allergies and to fulfill certain aims of the Programme "Health for all in the 21st Century". Part of this project was a prevalence study of the child population in Chrudim. All children of up to age 17 years were included (2853 girls and 3009 boys). We recorded a total of 25% males and 23,3% females with allergies in this group. The results of this study were...

The world's highest incidence of kidney carcinoma in both sexes is found in the Czech Republic. A case-control study observed the impact of genetic predisposition in first-degree relatives in the Czech Republic. Positive association was detected in overall incidence where OR = 1.89 (95% CI 1.34-2.67). Positive correlation was also found in tumours other than carcinoma with OR = 1.83 (95% CI 1.28-2.61) and shows low risk in subjects with positive family history. Statistically significant risk was found in siblings and tumours other than carcinoma of the kidney, where OR = 2.11 (95% CI 1.19-3.76). The presented study has revealed positive association...

Jaroslav Martinek

Hygiena 2008, 53(Suppl.):S11-S15

The objective of the communication is to provoke a discussion on the ways how to increase awareness of one's own responsibility towards health. It is generally known that so-called civilization-linked diseases are in first place among the causes of mortality. The risk of atherosclerosis, high blood pressure and myocardial infarction can be decreased in a simple way. An ample amount of regular exercise as well as moderation in alimentation are all that is to it. The most frequent complaint against wholesome exercise is lack of time. We can issue a leaflet, we can advance a campaign declaring: "Everyday biking to and from work is a fine way how to join...

Hygiena 2008, 53(4):143-145

The rash growth of industrialized society in the 19th century has been accompanied i.a. by a rapid growth of the population in urban centers, an enormous pollution of waterways and the ambient air. Large cities of that time were often plagued with epidemics of typhoid fever and cholera. In 1865, Max Josef von Pettenkofer initiated lectures in hygiene at the University of Munich, and in 1879 established the Institute of Hygiene at the Faculty of Medicine in Munich. Since the second half of the 19th century Pettenkofer was putting through the setting up of a sewage system for Munich, as well as that of a central supply and distribution of safe water,...

Syndrome of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities has been known since the middle of 80th of the last century. Although health professionals expressed their scepticism, they recommended the serious study of this problem by standard epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory methods. Later, the epidemiologic studies described higher frequency of the syndrome than it had been earlier suggested. The results verifying the hypothesis about the primary psychiatric initiation of the problems are controversial. The possible role of immunity systems dysfunction in the causality of the syndrome is still studied.

Hygiena 2008, 53(4):135-140

The behavioural complex of "life style" is affected by the attitudes to its individual components. The family has the most important impact on the child's attitudes during early childhood. The more social subjects with similar attitudes and the similar behaviour exert influence upon the target population, the better are the effects of the intervention on the development of behaviour. These general principles are the basis for the educational programme "Non-Smoking is the Norm" created for the pupils at the first degree of primary schools and their parents. The measurement of the effect included also the differences between children living in smoking...

Child accidents are among the major causes of child mortality and morbidity, namely in all industrialized countries. At present, a serious problem is the increasing number of traffic accidents which in the child population are by far the most frequent cause of post-accident mortality. Although traffic education is not presently accepted by the professional public unequivocally as an important factor significantly participating in the lowering of traffic accident incidence, discussed in the present communication is its influence on the knowledgeability profile and command of safety in road traffic in elementary school pupils, as well as in the lowering...

Human exposure to chlorination products has considerably increased during the 20th century especially after the 1950s with the development of public and leisure pools and other water recreational areas. When attending these aquatic environments, the populations of industrialized countries have been increasingly exposed to powerful chlorine-based oxidants, either through direct contact with chlorinated water or by inhaling them in the form of gases (trichloramine and chlorine gas) or of aerosols (hypochlorite/hypochlorous acid and chloramines). Hygiena 2008, 53(2):53-59

Naegleriasis or primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is invariably an acute, often fulminant infection of CNS caused by Naegleria fowleri, a small, free-living amoeba. Pathogenic free-living amoebae can cause serious illnesses in humans. The amoebae belonging to the genus Naegleria, Acanthamoeba and Balamuthia mandrillaris and Sappinia diploidea produce syndromes in man ranging from acute fatal disease to chronic tissue invasion with granulomatous manifestation. The purpose of this report is to describe the clinical history, treatment, pathology and methods of laboratory diagnostic of naegleriasis.
