During the 21st century, many global health threats related to zoonoses, new or re-emerging infectious diseases, climate change and/or environmental sustainability have emerged. Achieving harmonized approaches to the detection and prevention of these health risks is often difficult because traditional approaches are usually determined by the boundaries of financially and legislatively separated scientific fields, such as more or less independently functioning human and veterinary medicine, agriculture, climatology, sociology, economics, etc. The boundaries between these individual fields however, should not be solid, and cooperation should be based...
Amendment to Government Regulation No. 272/2011 Coll., on the protection of health against the adverse effects of noise and vibrationsREVIEW PAPERS
Dana Potužníková, Tomáš Hellmuth, David Kresl, Ondřej Fries
Hygiena 2023, 68(2):50-54 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1835
The aim of this article is the author's presentation of the most important adjustmens of Government Regulation No. 272/2011 Coll. for the professional public. This Government Regulation is going to come into force on 01/07/2023. The main purpose is to rationalize and simplify the relationship between two policies - environmental noise regulation and sustainable urban and transport infrastructure development. The changes concern in particular the area of traffic noise, i.e. noise from roads and railways. The current national framework is obsolete and it is causing absurd legal interpretations. The temporary legal exceptations have become rigid obligations...
Estimation of noise indicator Lden based on indicator Ldn for road traffic noise in the Czech RepublicORIGINAL ARTICLES
Zdeňka Vandasová, Tomáš Hellmuth, Alena Fialová
Hygiena 2023, 68(2):45-49 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1837
Objective: Noise indicator Lden is used in Health Risk Assessment (HRA) to estimate noise effects using dose-effect relationships. Determination of its value is often impossible due to the unavailability of noise data in the evening. The aim of this paper is to propose estimation methods for noise indicator Lden based on Ldn indicator for road traffic in the conditions of the Czech Republic and to determine the uncertainties of this estimation. Methodology: A total of 217 individual 24-hour road traffic noise measurements were analysed. They were obtained within the framework of the activities of...

Unclear ethical and legal aspects of wastewater surveillanceSHORT COMMUNICATIONS
František Kožíšek
Hygiena 2023, 68(1):34-35 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1830
The COVID-19 epidemic and associated monitoring of its causative agent in wastewater has led to an exceptional development of wastewater surveillance. This surveillance no longer entails mere monitoring of viruses or other infectious agents, but comprises examination of a number of chemicals and metabolites from which the health condition, behaviour, and indeed the socioeconomic status of a monitored population can be discerned. This type of research, which by its nature deals with sensitive personal data or may stigmatise various population groups does not currently have a clear legal and ethical framework. The situation should be rapidly remedied.

The article summarises the results of Czech Human Biomonitoring over a period of three decades. Human biomonitoring in the Czech Republic was commenced at the National Institute of Public Health, Prague, in 1994 as part of the Environmental Health Monitoring System and was later linked to European and worldwide professional activities in this area. During the course of this project the whole range of organic and inorganic xenobiotics and essential substances was monitored in the blood, urine and hair of the adult and child populations, in the breast milk of breastfeeding women and in other, less common matrices. The results have provided valuable long-term...

Hygiena 2023, 68(1):10-18 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1831
Tuberculosis is still a major global health problem. It affects over 10 million people each year and claims over 1.5 million victims. Although it is a disease that has been with mankind for thousands of years, it is only modern technology and the development of molecular biology that have enabled to reveal and explain the often unsuspected links and truths about the causative agent, the pathogenesis of the disease and its prevention. The current favourable epidemiological situation in developed countries is due to socio-economic changes and a general improvement in the health of the population rather than to the effect of the introduction of the BCG...

The aim of the consultant's report was to assess and analyze noise caused by the screams of rooks nesting in the trees of the greenery of a housing estate in Tábor. The results include a description and evaluation of the measurements, modeling of the immission acoustic situation and assessment of the health risks of noise (HRA) for the estimation of the noise burden on the residents of the urban housing estate and the school. The noise measurement was organized as a technical measurement in five sub-locations in a protected outdoor area and in one location inside the school. The measurement took place continuously with a continuous recording with a...

Public Health Service of the Czech Republic after the Velvet Revolution 1989REVIEW PAPERS
Jaroslav Kříž
Hygiena 2022, 67(4):151-156 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1822
Public Health Service of the Czech Republic was established in 1952 as a network for supervision of healthy living conditions. It gradually developed and was of considerable importance notwithstanding the limits of a socialist state. In November 1989 the Velvet Revolution took place; a dramatic but nonviolent overthrow that eliminated the communist regime. For Public Health Service it meant a start of a period of discussions about the further focus on the work and about new activities especially in primary disease prevention and health promotion and maintenance of the existing state health supervision. At the same time, changes in the network of public...

The article deals with the powers and responsibilities of Regional Public Health Authorities resulting from the Act on Funeral industry and compares them with powers and responsibilities of other supervisory bodies. It reflects the latest legislative amendments of the year 2017 and their impact on the activities and tasks of Regional Public Health Authorities in particular and of the Ministry of Regional Development. It outlines broader connections supported by cases from practice in the area of inspection activities of these public authorities with regard to the wider legislative framework and practical adherence thereto by funeral-related service...
Health risks from non-potable use of recycled water in buildings. Part 2 – GreywaterREVIEW PAPERS
František Kožíšek, Šárka Bobková, Dana Baudišová, Hana Jeligová
Hygiena 2022, 67(4):125-133 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1825
The paper describes the sources of greywater and its physical, chemical, and microbiological quality. The list of different non-potable uses of treated greywater in buildings and related exposure pathways of infections are provided. Possible health risks stemmed from ingestion, inhalation or dermal contact are characterised. Finally, required measures needed to protect public health, which have been missing in Czechia so far, are discussed. A combination of water quality standards for different ways of use, requirements for log reduction of reference pathogens of treatment technologies, and recommendations for end-users on safety behaviour seems to...
The share of Czech and Slovak doctors in achieving the global eradication of smallpoxEDITORIAL

Hygiena 2022, 67(4):123-124 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1824
Bifurcated needles used in the program of global smallpox eradication. They were introduced in 1968 and significantly simplified the vaccination process. The needles were in a plastic container with a conical lid with a hole, which only one needle fitted in. A vaccinator pulled it out and dipped the bifurcated part in the ampoule with a vaccine. The necessary amount of vaccine was captured in the gap between the prongs. Subsequently, it was vaccinated by repeated punctures into the skin. The needles used were placed in an empty container and sterilized. This procedure could be performed also by local vaccinators after a short training. Photo:...

Hygiena 2022, 67(3):107-113 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1817
Measuring nutrition literacy should be an important tool to improve nutrition literacy and subsequently dietary behaviour at the population level, but also to identify individuals with limited nutrition literacy with the potential to define personalised interventions. In addition, a nutrition literacy assessment tool may allow standardisation of scientific outcomes of population-based nutritional behaviour intervention programmes. However, no such tool currently exists in the Czech Republic. This paper sum- marizes the existing tools for assessing nutrition or food literacy from abroad and introduces the intention to develop a suitable tool applicable...

Gabriela Škrečková, Kvetoslava Rimárová, Peter Takáč
Hygiena 2022, 67(3):101-106 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1810
In the article we offer an overview of the influence of folate and folic acid on the aetiology of selected diseases, as well as the current state of food fortification in Slovakia and countries with the largest share of fortified food production. Folate and its synthesized form of folic acid are an important component of a healthy, balanced diet. Folate plays an important role in cell metabolism, DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. Folate intake is important for the prophylaxis of some diseases. It plays an important role in limiting the prevalence of congenital neural tube deformities, hyperhomocysteinaemia, certain types of cancer or in alleviating the...
