Women Have Greater Difficulties in Stopping Smoking: Are Sex Hormones Implicated?REVIEW PAPERS

Drahoslava Hrubá, Jindřich Fiala, Kateřina Nebeská, Vladimír Soška

Hygiena 2010, 55(2):58-60

Gender differences in the successful treatment of smoking dependence have been identified; women have greater difficulties in quitting smoking compared to men. Women reported higher levels of withdrawal symptoms and craving and diminished effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy. Sex hormones, especially estrogen, may play a role both in the metabolism of nicotine, cortisol concentrations, carving, withdrawal symptoms and risk of relapse.

The Risk of Generation of Carcinogenic Para-chloroaniline within Endodontic Therapy of Devitalised TeethORIGINAL ARTICLES

Ján Kováč, Daniel Kováč

Hygiena 2010, 55(2):54-57

The purpose of this article is to report on potential risk of formation of para-chloroaniline (PCA), a breakdown product of chlorhexidine (CHX) a toxic and carcinogenic compound. The generation of PCA is a potential consequence of the use of chlorhexidine which has been widely used as an antiseptic agent for routine dental plaque control and irrigation of root canals in endodontic treatment of devitalised, pulpless teeth, for reduction of microbiota.

The Problems of Hydromassage Bath Tubs in Rehabilitation OperationsORIGINAL ARTICLES

Radim Mudra, Marie Fiedorová, Danuše Hanslíková, Jaroslav Šimek, Radomír Polcar

Hygiena 2010, 55(2):46-53

The project verified the effectiveness of chemical disinfection in circulating lines of hydromassage bath tubs. It dealt with tubs in a health care facility, operated both under the filling of hot water produced from drinking water and iodine-bromine water. Long term inconsistent security of hydromassage systems has resulted in colonization by and significant densities of Pseudomonas aeruginosa organisms in water after operation of the bath tub prior to patient entry. This unsatisfactory performance is explained by inappropriate design of the hydro-massage system and the quality of applied materials (water stagnation in the secondary circuit...

Health Risk Assesment of Nickel in Drinking WaterORIGINAL ARTICLES

František Kožíšek, Hana Jeligová, Vladimíra Němcová

Hygiena 2010, 55(2):40-45

The most common sources of nickel in drinking water are metallic products situated at the end of plumbing systems, especially taps. For this reason, and because of various water stagnation times, the concentration of nickel at one sampling point can vary within the range of several orders of magnitude, and following overnight stagnation may reach peak values of up to 500 μg/l, i.e. 20 times higher than the current limit value (20 μg/l). Such a single oral nickel dose can provoke systemic contact dermatitis in nickel-sensitive individuals, who represent about 5% of the population.

Health Benefits of Physical ActivityREVIEW PAPERS

Daniela Stackeová

Hygiena 2010, 55(1):25-28

Physical activity is one of the major components of chronic disease prevention. Very strong scientific evidence based on a wide range of well-conducted studies shows that physically active people have higher levels of health-related fitness, a lower risk profile for developing a number of disabling medical conditions and lower rates of various chronic diseases than do people who are inactive. We present data on proposed the main health benefits of physical activity, about our proposed terminology in the Czech language and about the importance of physical education for fitness motivation. Our research is based on Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans...

100th Anniversary of Permanent Drinking Water Disinfection and its Current DevelopmentREVIEW PAPERS

Vladimír Bencko, František Kožíšek

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):130-135

The introduction of sand filtration and bank infiltration in drinking water treatment in the middle of the 19th century represented significant progress in efforts to attain safe drinking water. That filtration was sufficiently effective only on condition the raw river water had not been excessively contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms. An acceptable measure of safety was attained only on the introduction of its disinfection. After a century since the introduction of continuous chlorination of drinking water along with the previously established filtration, it has been estimated that drinking water produced in this way can be attributed with...

E-Bug: The European Antibiotic and Hygiene Teaching Resource for Junior and Senior School ChildrenREVIEW PAPERS

Tereza Kopřivová Herotová, Jiří Beneš

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):127-129

Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the key problems in community and hospital settings within Europe. Increasing antibiotic resistance is related to increasing antibiotic use. The choice of prescribed antibiotics is often influenced by various marketing mechanisms and patient's comfort rather than by medical criteria. Representatives of many European countries feel weight of the problem and support public educational compaigns to attain prudent antibiotic use for both medical professionals and the public. Nevertheless, no great public educational campaign has been introduced so far. E-Bug seems to be the first such activity of this scope.

Jana Vlčková

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):122-126

At present obesity is becoming a worldwide pandemic. There is a multifactor etiology of obesity. The main reason is an excess of energetic input. Genetic factors account for 40-70% of its development. These genetic factors are also influenced by external factors, of which the diet, physical activity, social and mental factors are of the greatest importance. For a reversal of the present adverse development a change of diet habits, an incerease of fitness and responsibility of each subject for their health are critical. It is necessary to start with the applying of preventive measures from early childhood when the lifestyle habits are formed. Parents,...

"The Hygiene Hypothesis" and Allergic Diseases among Children Aged 3 Years ELSPAC Study ResultsORIGINAL ARTICLES

Drahoslava Hrubá, Lubomír Kukla, Mojmír Tyrlík, Halina Matějová

Hygiena 2009, 54(4):112-116

The "Hygiene hypothesis" proposes an explanation for the rising prevalence of allergic diseases through improved care early in life. Reduced exposure to infectious agents can deprive the immune system of maturation and support the survival of the fetal-type Th1/Th2 ratio. In the ELSPAC study, children aged 3 years were divided into 3 groups according to absence/presence of allergic diseases (atopy, urtica, hay fever, asthma, others): non-allergic (NA), monoallergic (A1), polyallergic (A2+). Possible risk factors were evaluated: living in a large family, breast feeding, exposure to smoking, postnatal morbidity, vaccination,...

There are acceptable explanations for the biologic plausibility of these associations, supported by experimental studies. The findings are another reason for a comprehensive approach towards controlling the tobacco epidemic.

The target group consisted of pupils of the 8th class of primary schools, students of secondary schools and apprentices of training centers. From the wide range of life style factors the following had been chosen: smoking, drugs abuse and alcoholism. There has been demonstrated a statistically significant increase of risky behavior regarding the factors observed. The survey was an important supplementation of the standard epidemiology given by public health legislation. At the same time these surveys helped...
