To the History of Public Health Care in Ústí nad LabemSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Jaroslav Kříž

Hygiena 2011, 56(2):65-66

This brief article shows some examples of solving problems in public health at the start of the 20th century in Ústí nad Labem, a town in northern Bohemia. The town experienced rapid and successful development accompanied both by negative environmental impacts and great interest in public health matters as well. A water treatment plant for water from the Labe river was established, one of the first in Europe, along with several swimming pools and public baths. A health service for schools and various activities for nutrition of children from lower social classes were well organised.

Emotional Abuse and Neglect in ChildhoodREVIEW PAPERS

Lenka Chudomelová, Hana Provazníková

Hygiena 2011, 56(2):51-56

Emotional abuse and neglect is a part of the CAN syndrome (Child Abuse and Neglect). Emotional abuse often, if not always, accompanies physical and sexual abuse but may also occur as a distinct entity. Until recently, there has been chaos regarding the definition of emotional maltreatment; its significance has been questioned and consequences have been underestimated. However, lately this phenomenon has been brought to the attention of an increasing number of professionals dealing with children (health professionals, teachers, social workers, police). Based on several existing studies, a generally accepted definition of CAN syndrome was formulated...

Hygiena 2011, 56(2):40-50

We performed an anonymous questionnaire study to assess degree of exposure to risk factors resulting from health, lifestyle and occupational risks of 484 teachers of various school levels. The aim of the study was to assess if perception of these risk factors affected their subsequent health - related behaviours. Many respondents were exposed to several risk factors simultaneously. Most frequently we found serious diseases in respondent's relatives' anamneses and heightened occupational stress, the latter mainly among teachers in elementary schools. In total, 40% of teachers suffered from chronic complaints, namely musculoskeletal disorders and cardiovascular...

Smoking and Skin AgingREVIEW PAPERS

Petra Trojanová, Fuad Alradhi, Drahoslava Hrubá

Hygiena 2011, 56(1):22-25

Smoking contributes to the initiation and progression of many diseases, including the damages of the skin. A variety of epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies described the enhanced risk of different skin diseases among smokers, namely premature skin aging, poor wound healing, acne, psoriasis, eczema, hair lost, palmoplantar pustulosis, systemic lupus erythematodes. The brief overview offers the actual knowledge about associations between smoking and premature skin aging: that of smoking being twice as high as chronical exposure to sunburn. Causal relationships were verified, as many different mechanisms of action were found: mechanical,...

Effects of Low Frequency Noise from Open Air Music Festivals on Unconcerned People in the Surrounding AreasORIGINAL ARTICLES

Pavel Junek, Dana Potužníková, Tomáš Hellmuth, Lubomír Píša, Ivan Kučera

Hygiena 2011, 56(1):11-17

Low frequency noise in the frequency range below 200 Hz has a very low attenuation through the open air, walls, windows and other barriers. It propagates over very large distances and can cause standing waves and resonances in dwellings. Therefore, the acoustic fields can be non homogenous in the embosomed areas. Some of the sources of low frequency noise are musical instruments. Presently, open air festivals have become a part of our everyday life, and sleep disturbance is commonly reported by people living in surrounding areas. The authors of the paper relate complaints of citizens from the surroundings of the open air festivals locations with low...

Impact Assessment of PM10 Concentrations on Mortality and Morbidity in Ostrava during Smog EpisodesORIGINAL ARTICLES

Hana Tomášková, Ivan Tomášek, Hana Šlachtová, Helena Šebáková

Hygiena 2011, 56(1):5-10

The current level of PM10 pollution is associated with an increase in mortality and morbidity. The city Ostrava is one of the areas with deteriorated air quality and with occurrence of smog situations during winter months. The method of calculation of attributive proportions recommended by the WHO was used for evaluating the theoretical impact of the 2010 smog episode on mortality and morbidity. Attributive proportions express the proportion of cases due to the increase of short-term PM10 concentrations. The 2010 smog situation was compared with the smog episode in 2009. Results showed an almost twice as high estimated proportion...

The lifestyle is of utmost importance to human health. Health inequalities may result from the differences in living conditions that are not of the individual's own choosing and are often very difficult or even impossible to change. Nevertheless, what is modifiable is the occurrence of the risk lifestyle factors that increase the likelihood of developing a variety of diseases. The lifestyle is chosen by the individual who should be aware of risks associated with inappropriate health behaviours. The above-mentioned risk lifestyle factors are in particular tobacco use, alcohol abuse, overweight and obesity, lack of physical activity, and inappropriate...

Transport Isolator with a Closed System of Ventilation for the Transportation of Patients with Highly Virulent InfectionORIGINAL ARTICLES

Radek Bárta, Peter Bednarčík

Hygiena 2010, 55(4):124-129

The transport isolator is used for the isolation and transportation of a patient with highly virulent infection. It must ensure transport team safety and complete isolation of the infected patient from the surrounding environment. A successful outcome of the transportation depends on the availability of a transport isolator that enables the maintenance of vital functions and safe in-transport care. Transport isolators with an open system of ventilation using HEPA filters have been developed, having an air flow of about 120 litres per minute. Nevertheless, a HEPA filter cannot fully cope with a large air exchange and poses a risk of the infectious agent...

Health Risk Assessment of Chemical Substances from Removing of Old Environmental Loads Using the Dispersion ModelORIGINAL ARTICLES

Denisa Pelikánová, Zdeněk Fiala

Hygiena 2010, 55(4):117-123

The aim of the study was to build a two-dimensional view of potential health risk stratification associated with inhalation exposure of the population living in surroundings of a refinery-waste dump. Methods: For that purpose there was used a combination of air pollutant concentrations and the dispersion model of substances in the environment. The monitoring of selected contaminants was realized in the place of old environmental loads and in the nearby residential area. The zones of concentrations were modeled by using an air dispersion program. Subsequently, the concentrations were converted by the PC program into a two-dimensional projection of the...

The National Institute of Public Health in Prague, Czech Republic, was established after the World War I on the conviction of the political representatives of a new Czechoslovak state and medicial experts, that the Republic needed a modern institution which would effectively contribute to the issue of communicable diseases and apply new approches to public health and social medicine. Biomonitoring as a tool for verification of population exposure to environmental toxic compounds and for health risk assessment is since 1994 an integral part of the Czech Environmental Health Monitoring System (MZSO). Since 2006, the Czech Republic, by means of National Institute of Public Health, has been taken part in the PHIME project (Public health impact of long-term, low-level mixed element exposure in susceptible population strata) of the 6th FP of EU. In this project, the levels of lead, cadmium and mercury have been examined in blood of 150 children (79 boys, 71 girls) aged 5-12 years, living in regions with different environmental pollution...

Protection of Children from Passive Smoking in their HomesORIGINAL ARTICLES

Hygiena 2010, 55(3):86-91

Exposure to passive smoking has been recognized as serious health hazard, especially for children who are more vulnerable than adults to the damage caused by chemicals. Legislation restricting smoking in public places cannot protect children as they are primarily exposed in their homes and/or cars. Therefore, it is necessary to improve both public and individual health education concerned with protection of children against exposure to tobacco smoke. In some countries, the active advice services by health professionals are targeted on families with ailing children and "Smoke-free homes" programmes are being developed. In the Czech Republic, school-based...
