Prior to the digital revolution, the journal Current Contents served as the fundamental bibliographic resource for tracking new publications. Published in several thematic series, it was part of the collections of the professional library of the National Institute of Public Health. Articles from journals not directly owned by the library were procured via interlibrary loan services; alternatively, researchers could solicit reprints directly from the authors. Compared to contemporary standards, the acquisition of scientific information was significantly more arduous and protracted. The modern proliferation of scholarly literature and its immediate...
Assessment of benzene emissions from the Prachovice cement plant operation – an example of using the health risk assessment method for an existing sourceREPORT FROM PRACTICE
Jaroslav Říha
Hygiena 2025, 70(4):149-152 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1894
In 1979, a new cement production plant was established in Prachovice near Chrudim. Between 1994 and 2001, it underwent significant modernization. Most notably, natural gas as the energy source for lime firing was replaced by coal dust and crushed or liquid waste materials. Besides limestone, socalled corrective materials were used for cement production: ferruginous (dust from steel mills) and siliceous (originally natural sands, later foundry sands). Starting in 2017, residents in surrounding municipalities began reporting occasional odour complaints. Simultaneously, the cement plant started experiencing problems complying with emission limits for...
Confusion in evidence-based medicine – example of nicotineSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Hygiena 2025, 70(4):144-146 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1892
Evidence-based medicine, or EBM, is a concept or system that needs no explanation; we all follow it or should follow it. But what if even in reputable journals with high impact factor there are publications on the same topic with completely controversial results and conclusions? How to make sense of it? The topic of nicotine is unfortunately the most striking example so far, and biased information also has a major impact on morbidity and mortality.

The National Institute of Public Health was assigned by the Government and the Ministry of Health to conduct an analysis of the compliance with the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes in the Czech Republic. The Code was adopted in 1981, and it aims to reduce inappropriate marketing and protect breastfeeding. This code regulates the advertising and promotion of products intended for the nutrition and feeding of infants and young children. The NetCode was created to monitor the implementation of the Code in the Czech Republic, and a set of methodologies (protocols) was developed to define the monitoring process and rules.
Is vaping nicotine a gateway to smoking tobacco? Rules on how to review and design studiesSHORT COMMUNICATIONS
Eva Králíková, Iuliia Pavlovska
Hygiena 2025, 70(2):62-64 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1884
Publications on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) often present controversial conclusions. Methodologies and results vary widely, making it challenging to navigate the evidence. This is particularly true for the studies examining the association between the prevalence of vaping (EC use) and the prevalence of smoking, especially among young people. A frequently discussed concern is that nicotine vaping may serve as a gateway to later tobacco smoking (the gateway effect). Below, we outline key principles that studies on this topic should follow and that reviewers of publications should consider.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in a university campus environment. Emphasis was placed on identifying potentially high-risk areas with frequent surface contact and high population density. Methods: Sampling was conducted at pre-selected locations across the university using sterile swab sponges. Samples were enriched in buffered peptone water (24 h, 37 °C) and subsequently cultured on selective media. The presence of SA/MRSA was confirmed using PCR. For MRSA isolates, virulence genes were detected, spa types were determined,...

Extraordinary event at the Seč valley reservoir caused by massive growth of DinoflagellatesREPORT FROM PRACTICE
Jana Kratochvílová, Jitka Seidlová, Jaroslav Říha
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):27-30 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1876
The Seč valley reservoir serves as a retention area during floods, as a source of drinking water and in recent decades as an important recreational area. Due to eutrophication, cyanobacterial blooms have repeatedly occurred here. In July 2024, a highly exceptional event occurred when, after heavy rains, an extreme amount of protozoa from the group of giant nematodes (Dinophyta) entered the reservoir. They then formed a coating that progressed with the flow of water through the reservoir. The phenomenon was observed for about a month. So far, freshwater Dinoflagellates (as opposed to marine Dinoflagellates) have not been found to produce toxins dangerous...

Chlorate – a new problem indicator in swimming pool waterREVIEW PAPERS
František Kožíšek, Hana Jeligová, Pavla Wildová
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):11-16 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1879
In 2024, the Czech Republic amended the legislation that deals with hygiene requirements for swimming pools. One of the amendments concerned the limit of chlorate in public swimming pools and hot tubs and the obligation to monitor it. It was because more and more pool operators use sodium hypochlorite for disinfection and it was found during inspections that the concentration of its by-product – chlorate – in the pool water in some cases reaches health hazardous levels. The article introduces the conditions of the new regulation, the health risks of chlorate and the method of deriving the limit value, the requirements for chlorate in swimming...
Contribution to the everlasting debate: how to monitor legionellae?REVIEW PAPERS
Dana Baudišová, František Kožíšek
Hygiena 2025, 70(1):5-10 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1871
This paper seeks to highlight the scope of the Legionella issue and contribute to its better understanding. It explains the necessity of perceiving it in a broader context and the purpose of using the indicators Legionella spp. and Legionella pneumophila, which cannot be randomly confused or stably substituted for each other, as both have different functions. Any investigation (whether it is domestic distribution system risk assessment, an epidemiological investigation or a research study) and evaluation must be carried out with a clear objective and using analytical methods appropriately chosen for that purpose.

In five-year cycles, the Czech Republic is obliged to calculate Strategic Noise Maps, of the purpose of which is to identify critical points, i.e. places with the highest concentration of people affected by the highest noise levels. The regional authorities, the Prague City Hall and the Ministry of Transport are working on noise reduction action plans for these places. Their purpose is to describe and evaluate the already implemented measures for the given area, propose possible new noise reduction measures and define long-term strategies leading to noise reduction. Furthermore, the action plans evaluate the proposed measures economically. Prepared...

Aim: Following the ban on lead additives in gasoline and interior paints, drinking water in homes with old lead plumbing and service connection remains a major source of lead exposure for the child population. Therefore, new legislative precautionary measures in the form of risk assessment and management are directed at this area. Methods: The Regional Public Health Authorities conducted a pilot project in 2023 to monitor the presence of lead in drinking water in school facilities. A total of 434 different kinds of schools were investigated in all regions of the Czech Republic as part of the project. The survey was primarily focused on school buildings...
