Objective: The objective was to obtain and evaluate information on the level of annoyance caused by industrial noise from mining activities to the population.
Methods: The research used a combination of long-term monitoring of noise at night (LAeq,T) from the operation of the Turów surface mine (Poland) and area modeling of the noise load in the three closest residential locations in the Czech Republic (exposed areas of Uhelná and Oldřichov na Hranicích, control area of Václavice). In 2022 and 2023, a questionnaire survey focused on issues of the environment, health status, quality of life and demographic data took place in these locations. Data from the questionnaires were evaluated using descriptive statistics and statistical tests (χ2 test and two-sample t-test) at the 5% significance level by the Stata version 17 software. Subsequently, the data from the noise load modeling and the survey were linked and compared with the ERF (exposure-response function).
Results: Since 2021 the monitored levels of noise pollution have remained practically the same, in Uhelná LAeq,T = 35.1 to 36.5 dB, in Oldřichov na Hranicích LAeq,T = 35.2 to 35.5 dB. The measurement did not prove a significant proportion of low-frequency noise in the interior spaces of residential buildings. People in the exposed area perceive noise from commercial/industrial activity as significantly annoying in 59%; they perceive noise mainly as humming, as variable in time and as rumbling. Approximately 63% of the people in the exposed area perceive the noise situation as worse in the last five years.
Conclusion: The results indicate that in the case of exposure to noise from surface mines when compared with published ERFs for industrial noise sources, it is possible to expect higher subjective sleep disturbance from noise from mining activities.
