Confrontation with the coronavirus pandemic provide better motivation and opportunities to quit smoking. Some aspects such as loneliness, boredom, lack of finances and related stress may lead to increased rates of smoking. The health care system should use the situation for a population campaign and actively promote effective forms of treatment of tobacco dependence.

Human microbiome and drinking water microbiome – parallels and relationshipsREVIEW PAPERS

Šárka Bobková, Dana Baudišová, František Kožíšek, Hana Jeligová

Hygiena 2021, 66(2):55-59 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1780

The development of modern biological and molecular biological methods made it possible to look at natural or technical ecosystems in a broader context. Therefore, it is possible to study not only a single microorganism but also the entire group of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts) present in a certain ecosystem (e.g. in water, soil, or human gut), the so called microbiome, and also how different microbiomes influence each other and whether they are similar in their composition. The aim of this paper is to summarize the knowledge about the drinking water microbiome and intestinal microbiome and to find possible parallels and relationships...

Epidemics, pandemics: lessons learned from the history of infectionsREVIEW PAPERS

Vladimír Bencko, Petr Šíma, Milena Bušová

Hygiena 2021, 66(2):48-54 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1779

Global reports of infectious diseases show that measles, tuberculosis, HIV, syphilis, cholera, a persistently high incidence of malaria and other transmissible diseases continue to occur periodically, often accompanied by an increase in the number of affected people. Moreover, new infectious diseases are emerging whose aetiology has not been reliably identified or have been considered non-pathogenic to humans. The current pandemic of Covid-19 caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has highlighted the necessity of redirecting biomedical research to early diagnosis and rational therapy of respiratory viruses in particular, as well as prevention of...

Urolithiasis preventionREVIEW PAPERS

Erik Drabiščák, Erik Dorko

Hygiena 2021, 66(1):10-15 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1772

Urolithiasis is a multifactorial disease with a problematic character and with a high tendency to recurrence. Primary (prophylaxis) and secondary (metaphylaxis) prevention are important against the disease outbreak or its recurrence. Composition and amount of food and water taken daily, together with a healthy lifestyle play an important role in urolithiasis prevention. Identification and control of risk factors before the first manifestation are tasks of prophylaxis. Metaphylaxis seeks to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones formation by suppressing risk factors that play a crucial role in pathological processes. Improvement of eating habits with...

The reality of and myths of the tobacco industry, their principle and spreadREVIEW PAPERS

Kamila Zvolská, Eva Králíková

Hygiena 2020, 65(4):158-166 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1771

By the spreading of myths, the tobacco industry (TI) has long sought to weaken or delay the adoption of effective tobacco control measures that reduce tobacco consumption. Through the medium of myths, TI uses its economic power, lobbying, marketing or media manipulation to discredit scientific research and to distribute its products. TI globally interferes with tobacco control and seeks the role of a socially responsible partner with governments in this area. The revised EU Tobacco Products Directive (TDP) 2014/40/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, which sets minimum rules for tobacco products in EU member states, has been identified...

The effect of coffee drinking on frequency of selected chronic diseasesREVIEW PAPERS

Nikola Pelechová, Kvetoslava Rimárová, Jana Diabelková

Hygiena 2020, 65(4):152-157 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1765

Coffee is one of the most popular and most frequently consumed beverages in the world due to its stimulating effects on the central nervous system, but also due to its taste and aroma. Roasted coffee is a complex mixture of more than 1,000 bioactive compounds. Caffeine and chlorogenic acid are among the basic and most well-known components in coffee. Caffeine in one cup of coffee exerts its effect through antagonism of adenosine receptors, which binds to specific sites in brain cells instead of adenosine, thereby delaying the onset of sleep. New epidemiological studies and experimental research suggest that coffee consumption may help prevent several...

Nutritional recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases - evidence, formulation, controversies and ambiguitiesREVIEW PAPERS

Jindřich Fiala

Hygiena 2020, 65(4):140-151 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1764

The aim of the article is to summarise the currently valid nutritional recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The basis is an overview of the main points of two recent clinical recommendations of medical societies, namely the European Recommendations 2016 and the American AHA Recommendations 2019, and their commentary. It turns out that many of the former recommendations have had to be reconsidered and are no longer valid. At the same time much remains unclear and some new findings are still contradictory and controversial. It seems that in the near future it will be necessary to further revise the nutritional recommendations...

Vending water machines in the Czech RepublicREVIEW PAPERS

František Kožíšek, Jana Motýlová

Hygiena 2020, 65(3):115-119

Vending water machines as an alternative supply of drinking water have been progressively implemented in the Czech Republic (CR) since 1993 when the local businessman Miroslav Petružálek designed, manufactured, and brought into operation the first vending water machine in Kolín. The Czech approach differs from similar systems used in other countries: it more closely resembles the sale of bottled high-quality underground water, to be filled into the user's container, than additional tap water treatment. The article features the principle and working of the Czech vending machines, legislative requirements, experience with drinking water quality, present...

Obesity is not a problem restricted to the adult population anymore, it does equally affect among childe and adolescents. Nowadays child obesity is a global problem in developed countries. Persistent increase in overweight and obesity in children has raised concern about the related negative impact of this trend on the general health of the population. One of the markers of this impact is the occurrence of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome includes a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors, indicating increased risk of future cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by dysfunction of visceral adipocytes...

Coronavirus and smokingDISCUSSION

Eva Králíková

Hygiena 2020, 65(2):78-79 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1756

Early publications on the characteristics of diagnosed patients with the new type of SARS CoV-19 coronavirus indicate a lower proportion of smokers compared to prevalence in the given populations, although smoking status is very rarely reported. Hospitalised smokers, on the other hand, have more severe disease progression than non-smokers and are at higher risk of death, particularly the complications in which smoking is involved, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, renal or cardiovascular failure. Also, the relationship of smoking with the ACE2 receptors is discussed. We do not know the possible misleading and confounding factors or the exact...

Pavel Junek, Tomáš Hellmuth, Aleš Jiráska, Jiří Michal

Hygiena 2020, 65(2):63-70 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1750

According to WHO findings, noise has become the second most serious environmental pollutant. In 2002, the European Commission issued Directive 2002/49/EC on the assessment and management of environmental noise, which became an important framework for the identification of noise in EU countries. This Directive describes the development of strategic noise maps and environmental noise action plans, which are carried out in regular five-year cycles. The Czech Republic has extensive experience in this area and the National Reference Laboratory for Environmental Noise participates in the work of a number of working groups of the European Commission, the...
