Psychosocial and socioeconomic factors contribute to the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, with a worse clinical course and prognosis of cardiovascular disease. Stress plays an important role on several levels. It affects risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, the onset and development of atherosclerosis and can trigger a cardiovascular event. It modifies behaviour and lifestyle which in turn affect mental and physical health. The article focuses on issues of stress, the impact of stress on cardiovascular disease and points out how acute and chronic stress can influence developement of cardiovascular diseases in the light of epidemiological and pathophysiological evidence, and suggests how to use this knowledge in practice.
