Nutrition as primary prevention of communicable diseases?REVIEW PAPERS

Petr Šíma, Vladimír Bencko, Igo Kajaba

Hygiena 2022, 67(2):56-60 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1804

The article is a reminder that in addition to classic anti-epidemic measures there is a possibility of prevention of communicable (infectious) diseases (but also of non-communicable chronic diseases) that are specifically targetted by nutrition programs. Since ancient times, when the causes and nature of diseases were unknown (so even precisely targetted drugs, let alone antibiotics, were unavailable), the only way to prevent and treat diseases was to change nutrition. Although nutritional health promotion has proven itself many times over it has, as typical in the history of medicine, sometimes been forgotten. Hippocrates (460-377 BC) was aware of...

Evidence-based public health: why it is important and how it differs from evidence-based clinical medicineREVIEW PAPERS

Michaela Špačková, Kateřina Ivanová, Hana Orlíková, Jan Kynčl, Radim Líčeník

Hygiena 2022, 67(2):49-55 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1811

The aim of the article is to summarise the main principles of evidence-based public health and to define in which particular ways it differs from evidence-based clinical medicine. The paradigm of evidence-based medicine has dominated clinical practice for 30 years. However, the evidence-based approach should also be applied in public health practice and based on a synthesis of the best available evidence, applicable theoretical models, professional experience and in-depth knowledge of a specific population, including adaptation to its preferences. Scientific argumentation should employ systematic work with data and information systems whilst evaluating...

Jaroslav Kříž

Hygiena 2022, 67(2):64-66 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1813

The war in the Ukraine, resulting from a brutal attack by Russia, has inspired the author to recollect a visit to Kiev in 1976 and negotiations with colleagues at the Ukrainian Institute of General and Environmental Hygiene about experiences with monitoring the health impacts of environmental pollution. A warm reception, hospitality, interest in professional issues and the atmosphere of well-being during the stay in Kiev sharply contrasts with the ongoing terrible war. Unforeseeable damage in public health conditions will have to be added to the humanitarian and material consequences of the war. The author deeply regrets that the Ukraine is faced with...

Another reason to stop smoking: The environmentSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Eva Králíková

Hygiena 2022, 67(2):61-63 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1807

Money, health, social relationships or feeling addicted - these arguments for stopping smoking have certainly been heard and considered by smokers many times. Wasn't that enough to decide to quit smoking? So what about the environment? Quitting smoking because of the environment is not a bad idea at all. Tobacco devastates our lives by affecting the environment in which we live on a global scale. This is the theme of this year's World No Tobacco Day (WHO). The environment is being destroyed by tobacco growing, cigarette production and distribution, and the subsequent waste. This can also be a good reason to stop using cigarettes.

An unusual conferenceSHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Jaroslav Kříž

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):35-37 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1799

A conference of public health officers from the northern Bohemia region of the Czech Republic, with participants from other re-gions and institutions, was held 40 years ago in February 1982. Instead of professional issues, the programme comprised unorthodox and humorously presented themes inspired by work, life and political problems. The speeches were coloured by hyperbole, irony, fantasy and high intellect, often on the verge of political risk-taking (it was the time of the communist regime). One of the many examples: "Epidemiology will deal with human stupidity in the future. Everything indicates that it is highly contagious". A unique conference...

Risks arising from long-term interruption of drinking water supply in hospitalsREVIEW PAPERS

Iveta Klementová, František Kožíšek

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):28-34 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1806

Any longer-term interruption of water supply in hospitals has a very adverse impact on the health care provided. This is why every hospital should develop an emergency plan for providing water as part of its emergency management. This paper describes the basic obligations of healthcare facilities in water supply, and the main causes and types of supply failures. It also lists the main risks relating to such circumstances, and the options of control and remedial measures available. Finally, it calls attention to existing tools and guidelines supporting the development of a water supply emergency plan.

The effectiveness of widely used disinfectants in removing contamination with cytotoxic drugsORIGINAL ARTICLES

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):20-27 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1800

Objectives: Cytotoxic therapeutics (CT) pose a risk to healthcare professionals. Surface disinfectants are used in hospitals to prevent microbial contamination. Information about their effects on removing CT is incomplete. Our study has examined the effectiveness of selected disinfectants on CT floor contamination. Methods: According to a survey in 43 hospitals, the nine most commonly used disinfectants were selected and tested for the presence of nine CTs - cyclophosphamide (CP), ifosfamide (IF), capecitabine (CAP), sunitinib (SUN), methotrexate (MET), doxorubicin (DOX), irinotecan (IRI), paclitaxel (PX) and 5-fluorouracil (FU). Results: The most...

Comparison of the development of selected pollutant emissions in the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic in the years 2000-2018ORIGINAL ARTICLES

Lívia Kaňuková, Kvetoslava Rimárová

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):12-19 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1785

Air pollution is currently considered a major public health problem responsible for increasing morbidity and mortality. Polluted air contributes to the global burden of respiratory and allergic diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia and possibly tuberculosis. Deteriorated air quality is closely linked to the amount of anthropogenic emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere. These have different origins - from industrial and energy sources, through emissions from transport to small sources from local household heating. Air pollution is a heterogeneous mixture of compounds that includes ozone, carbon monoxide,...

Smoking and hearing lossORIGINAL ARTICLES

Michaela Škerková, Martina Kovalová, Tomáš Rychlý, Nikol Mikolášová, Jana Janoutová, Rastislav Maďar, Eva Mrázková

Hygiena 2022, 67(1):4-11 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1802

Objective: Hearing loss has a significant impact on interpersonal communication. It is a symptom that can be caused by many risk factors, including smoking. This work has aimed to determine whether there is a connection between smoking and hearing impairment and to determine the degree of association, considering variables such as gender and age. Methodology: Hearing thresholds at frequencies of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 8,000 Hz were compared using audiometry. Prevalences of hearing loss occurrence and hearing thresholds were compared according to age groups and smoking levels determined by the Brinkman index (BI). The average hearing thresholds...

Nicotine pouches - a medicine from tobacco shops?SHORT COMMUNICATIONS

Kamila Zvolská

Hygiena 2021, 66(4):137-140 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1789

With a growing awareness of the devastating effects of smoking, annoying odours and the irritability of smoke, new products are emerging that can deliver nicotine without burning, especially to those who have not been able to or do not want to stop using nicotine. However, they are not intended for non-smokers, including children. Recent novelties are nicotine pouches, which do not contain any tobacco - their health risk is minimal. This article provides an overview of current knowledge.

One Health approach - concept, benefits and challenges of its applicationREVIEW PAPERS

Katarína Kromerová, Vladimír Bencko

Hygiena 2021, 66(4):131-136 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1794

One Health is a science-based holistic concept that recognises the close link between human, animal and environmental health and has many benefits. For successful implementation, it requires a multi-sectoral, multidisciplinary approach at the local, national and global levels. It is associated with many challenges, such as overcoming reluctance from individual scientific disciplines, insufficient harmonisation of terminology, priorities and concepts across disciplines and sectors and many uncertainties to be assessed and inputs for activities to be identified. Other challenges include problematic assessment of cost-benefit ratios as there are few comparable...

Robert Koch's postulates and contemporary evidence-based medicineREVIEW PAPERS

Vladimír Bencko

Hygiena 2021, 66(3):102-106 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1788

Koch's main contribution to the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM) was the formulation of his four postulates which helped to confirm the causal relationship between pathogenic microbes and infectious diseases, and in enabling credible diagnosis of such diseases through microscopy, inoculation and cultivation. A further stage in the development of EBM is represented by the Bradford Hill criteria, a group of nine principles applicable to non-transmissible diseases. The present discussion focuses on the limitations of EBM and its primary significance and use.

Healthcare Waste and New ChallengesORIGINAL ARTICLES

Jana Loosová, Julie Mokrá, Petr Grusman

Hygiena 2021, 66(3):73-79 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1791

Analysis of the production and management of healthcare waste reveals trends that point to an atypical set-up of the waste market in the Czech Republic. Legislative changes will influence these trends. Specific changes from the perspective of the Regional Public Health Authorities and the operation of healthcare facilities are presented following the first introduction of the implementing Decree No 273/2021. A broader context and further challenges in the field of health care waste management in relation to sustainability and a long-term transformation to a recycling economy are also outlined.
