This brief article shows some examples of solving problems in public health at the start of the 20th century in Ústí nad Labem, a town in northern Bohemia. The town experienced rapid and successful development accompanied both by negative environmental impacts and great interest in public health matters as well. A water treatment plant for water from the Labe river was established, one of the first in Europe, along with several swimming pools and public baths. A health service for schools and various activities for nutrition of children from lower social classes were well organised.
