Occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus on frequently touched surfaces in a university environment
Kristýna Brodíková, Iveta Adámková, Renáta Karpíšková
Hygiena 2025, 70(2):48-53 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1882
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in a university campus environment. Emphasis was placed on identifying potentially high-risk areas with frequent surface contact and high population density. Methods: Sampling was conducted at pre-selected locations across the university using sterile swab sponges. Samples were enriched in buffered peptone water (24 h, 37 °C) and subsequently cultured on selective media. The presence of SA/MRSA was confirmed using PCR. For MRSA isolates, virulence genes were detected, spa types were determined,...

Noise reduction action plans – quiet areas
Pavel Junek, Dana Potužníková, Tomáš Hellmuth, Aleš Jiráska
Hygiena 2025, 70(2):54-57 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1883
This article follows on from previous articles dedicated to strategic noise maps and action plans. In the first article Strategic Noise Maps and Action Plans 2024, we described the process of strategic noise mapping (Hygiena 4/2024), in the second article, we focused on the description of action plans and their significance Noise Reduction Action Plans in Practice (Hygiena 1/2025). In this last article in the series, we would like to focus on quiet areas, i.e. places where noise levels are low and these places can serve as places of relaxation from noise. We will look at how agglomeration action plans deal with quiet areas. We will describe the problems...

Is vaping nicotine a gateway to smoking tobacco? Rules on how to review and design studies
Eva Králíková, Iuliia Pavlovska
Hygiena 2025, 70(2):62-64 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1884
Publications on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) often present controversial conclusions. Methodologies and results vary widely, making it challenging to navigate the evidence. This is particularly true for the studies examining the association between the prevalence of vaping (EC use) and the prevalence of smoking, especially among young people. A frequently discussed concern is that nicotine vaping may serve as a gateway to later tobacco smoking (the gateway effect). Below, we outline key principles that studies on this topic should follow and that reviewers of publications should consider.
Analysis of compliance with the International code of marketing of breast-milk substitutes using the NetCode protocol - summary

Hygiena 2025, 70(2):65-67 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1888
The National Institute of Public Health was assigned by the Government and the Ministry of Health to conduct an analysis of the compliance with the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes in the Czech Republic. The Code was adopted in 1981, and it aims to reduce inappropriate marketing and protect breastfeeding. This code regulates the advertising and promotion of products intended for the nutrition and feeding of infants and young children. The NetCode was created to monitor the implementation of the Code in the Czech Republic, and a set of methodologies (protocols) was developed to define the monitoring process and rules.
