Assessed is tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and marijuana abuse by students of "standard secondary schools" of the Ústí Region. The Ústí Region is specific in a range of factors which could support increased intake of these drugs, and results of some studies bring only data covering the whole republic. For data collection were used questions from the European Model Questionnaire (EMQ), focused on this issue. The survey was carried out at 43 secondary schools, where in there have been evaluated 3,558 questionnaires, 1,809 from boys and 1,749 from girls. Our results describe the high intake of selected drugs in high school boys and girls difference...

Usefulness of Human Biomonitoring for the Process of Risk Assessment of Exposure to Xenobiotics Including Dietary Intake Using as an Example the Exposure to MercuryREVIEW PAPERS
Katarína Kromerová, Vladimír Bencko
Hygiena 2017, 62(4):123-128 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1566
Human biomonitoring is an efficient and cost-effective way to measure the level of exposure of the human body to xenobiotics. Its advantage is the integration of all exposure routes and sources, it reduces the number of assumptions that need to be done when estimating food consumption, the possibility of clarifying the human metabolism and mechanism of toxicity of contaminants, the possibility of its use in case of the majority of xenobiotics and the fact that it reflects the internal dose of the contaminant at any given point in time. However, further harmonization is necessary in the area of human biomonitoring, to derive equivalents of markers of...

Hygiena 2017, 62(4):119-122 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1551
Caring for surgical instruments is an integral part of preparation for surgery. Appropriate care of surgical instruments has an impact not only on patient safety, but also on their quality and tool life. The aim of the research was to determine how perioperative nurses/midwives are caring for surgical instruments. It was found that Perioperative nurses/midwives endeavor to comply with generally applicable principles of surgical care, but some shortcomings have also been identified that could have a negative impact on both the quality and life of the instruments, as well as the safety of patients in surgical procedures.

Influence of income from pensions on life expectancy was described in several articles in medical journals and research reports. Present study tried to verify this association in the Czech population of 65 years of age. However, only a very low correlation was found in men and medium correlation in women between regional averages of pension income and life expectancy with limited statistical significance. On the contrary, the percentage of higher educated significantly correlated with life expectancy in both men and women and determined life expectancy by about 40%. The author discusses the low effect of pensions income on life expectancy of elderly...

HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT AND PSYCHoSOMATIC AND PSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS OF RISK PERCEPTIONPodíl tabáku na úmrtích ve východní EvropěREVIEW PAPERS
Vladimír Bencko
Hygiena 2017, 62(3):90-93 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1555
Qualified assessment of potential health risks in the living and working environment, related to existing buildings and planned industrial, transport or other building activities/projects is an essential part of their audit. While the initial phase of the risk assessment, namely its identification and exposure assessment, are of a purely naturalistic nature, the self-estimation of the risk level already includes increasingly arbitrary aspects (eg safety factors). Risk communication and, in particular, risk management mean that, in psychosocial terms, decision-making is then put into a political context. An indispensable component of that system of...
New Trends in the Prevention of Biofilm Formation in HealthCare PremisesREVIEW PAPERS
Iveta Danilová, Irena Lovětinská-Šlamborová
Hygiena 2017, 62(3):85-89 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1520
Most bacteria exist as a cell community that adheres to living or inert surfaces. This fellowship is called a biofilm and it is often associated with health complications. Bacterial biofilm infections are especially problematic because the sessile bacteria resist the host's immune mechanisms, antibiotics and disinfectants. The review deals with the principle of biofilm formation and with aspects that affect this process. It tries to bring readers new trends in modern wound dressing, in the treatment of healthcare premises, water and invasive medical devices, which should lead to a minimization of biofilm formation and the incidence of health- care...

Introduction: In the 1970s and 1980s we noticed the occurrence of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius Linné, 1758) in flats, family houses and accommodation facilities in Slovakia and only sporadically in the Czech Republic. Under regular monitoring of this ectoparasite by hygienists from a department of disinfection, disinsection, and deratization, it was possible not only to eliminate the occurrence of the parasite but in the 1980s even to eradicate it. Today, it is necessary again to address this major global health issue. Cimex lectularius has once again returned to human habitats. Its biological development and activity are bond to...

The Public Health Service in the former Czechoslovakia got started in 1952 and its development and work are documented in many sources except for the years 1951 and 1952 when the system was being prepared conceptually. According to the few documents that are available, on the establishment of the public health service, there has participated the Ukrainian professor of hygiene N. N. Litvinov from the former Soviet Union on request from the Czechoslovak government, along with Czechoslovak professors Vilém Škovránek and Pavel Macúch. Summarized is available information, however, there continues to be a minimum of authentic facts from that time.
CURRENT TRENDS IN THE PROCESS OF RISK ASSESSMENT OF EXPOSURE TO XENOBIOTICS INCLUDING DIETARY INTAKEREVIEW PAPERS
Katarína Kromerová, Vladimír Bencko
Hygiena 2017, 62(2):54-61 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1512
New trends in risk assessment of exposure to xenobiotics (including via food) respond to rapid advances in science, risk assessment methodologies, the generation of and access to a huge volume of data on various factors and parameters and changes in the regulatory environment. On the other hand, as such they constitute additional challenges. There is a clear tendency for an integrated approach to risk assessment of exposure to xenobiotics including those in the food chain on several levels. The aim of these approaches is to ensure that the result of the risk assessment process by its qualified estimation as established by law reflects as closely as...

Inappropriate lifestyle with excess energy in the diet and lack of physical activity is the cause of a positive energy balance. Obesity occurs most commonly as a result of a positive energy balance. Obesity is characterized by increase of BMI (body mass index) and percentage of body fat. Dietary therapy is the basis of a complex therapy for people with overweight and obesity. In a clinically healthy 45-year-old man there was realized a six year non-pharmacological overweight therapy. When the patient was behaving according to dietary and exercise recommendations a decrease in body weight on average 3.2 kg per month, decrease in body fat, decrease in...

Eliška Kuchařová, Emília Biborová
Hygiena 2017, 62(1):24-26 | DOI: 10.21101/hygiena.a1487
Health care associated infections represent a risk that affects morbidity, mortality and total cost of health-care across the world. The results of the European Point Prevalence Study, focused on health-care associated infections and the use of antimicrobials and organized by the ECDC in 2011-2012, reveal the severity of this problem troughout the EU member states. The introduction of the a functional infection prevention and control programme in health care facilities is a fundamental prerequisite for a rational approach to the issue of health-care associated infection.

The issue of noise is among the key issues of long-term road transport in terms of its negative impacts on the environment and human health, which is considerably affected by technical the condition of the road - road wearing course. Noise generated by contact of the tyre with the and road surface occurs in vehicles from the speed of approx. 40 km/h and higher, therefore low-noise road pavements have recently been used as anti-noise measures. Although there were just several cases of specialized surface installation in the Czech Republic in 2010, in 2013 there were already dozens of cases. Faster acoustic degradation has been found with low-noise surfaces,...

The paper presents research performed in order to classify the correction for sound wave reflection from house facades with protected outdoor environs of buildings. Quantification of this correction is necessary because of the Directive 2002/49/EC which demands to subtract the reflected component of the sound pressure level from the measured sound pressure level A. The norm ČSN ISO 1996-2 deals with the problem and classifies three situations which can occur during measurements. An important document in the Czech environment is the Methodical Manual for the Assessment of Noise in the Protected Outdoor Environs of Buildings which assigns to all situations...
