Response and Non-response in the Czech Population Health Survey (Results of the HELEN Study)ORIGINAL ARTICLES

Kristýna Žejglicová, Marek Malý, Jana Kratěnová

Hygiena 2008, 53(2):40-47

Response rates are one of important markers to influence the validity of epidemiological studies, including selective surveys of population health. One of selective surveys performed in the Czech Republic is the questionnaire-based survey - the "HELEN study". The HELEN study is a part of the System of Monitoring of Health of the Population related to the environment. The overall response rate of the study decreased from 70 % in the first stage (1998-2002) to 50 % in the second stage (2004-2005). The lower response rate was due to decreasing willingness in Czech society to participate in similar surveys and was also influenced by the performance of...

The article brings a brief overview of health promotion development since the creation of a modern definition of health (WHO 1948) and associated landmarks such as the Alma-Ata conference, the Ottawa Charter (1986) and further reiterates the concept as presented by WHO in 2007. The author then focuses on the development of health promotion in the Czech Republic (CR), which was largely based on Health Promotion Projects, voluntary communal activity funded by the Ministry of Health and recently the HEALTH 21 project. The author goes on to cite critical evaluation of health promotion in the CR by WHO/EURO experts and presents proposals for improving health...

Simple Nutrition Software for Quick Assessment and the Results of its Distribution to Members of the PublicORIGINAL ARTICLES

Jindřich Fiala

Hygiena 2008, 53(1):12-18

There is a considerable gap between the need for nutritional assessment and the frequency of its actual performence. One of the main reasons is the demandingness of available nutritional tools, because usually it is necessary to input intricately detailed dietary data, which is time-consuming. Currently accessible tools are therefore used almost exclusively by nutritional specialists and not by general practitioners or even the general public. The objective of the described project was to create a very simple computerized tool for introductory dietary assessment according to major food groups and the food pyramid. The main questionnaire form consists...

A preventive check-up database from the Šumperk district, containing 49 426 subjects has been employed for epidemiological studies in order to illuminate the role of selected risk factors for cancers and metabolic diseases. The influence of blood group A on the incidence of stomach cancer was assessed with the conclusion, that this blood group does not increase risk of this disease. The influence of smoking on the incidence of different histological type of lung cancer has been investigated in another study. A more pronounced association was revealed between smoking and squamous cell carcinoma and small cell carcinoma than between adenocarcinoma and...

Hygiena 2007, 52(4):135-141

Over the last three decades a number of indices of socio-economic deprivation (SESDI) were created. The goal of the review is to bring published information on methods of the most commonly used SES indices and their use in public health. The paper presents the theoretical concepts of poverty and deprivation and their measurement. It deals with the main data sources for construction of indices, their advantages and weaknesses. With respect to the most sophisticated system of deprivation indices in Great Britain and their widespread routine use, the review was based on English and Scottish indices of deprivation. In the paper the validity of indices,...

Hygiena 2007, 52(4):126-134

The results of epidemiological studies confirmed evidence in the differences in mortality of social classes or groups that reflects the concurrent effect of many factors - including the socio-economic ones. Health is affected by these factors mostly by the extent of deprivation of the specific social group - it is both material and social deprivation.Socio-economic deprivation is measured at both levels - at the individual as well as at area level using a variety of socio-economic deprivation indices. The methodology of measurement of the socio-economic status has also been elaborated by the World Health Organization. Deprivation is thought to...

Using Molecular Biology Based Methods in Public Health Microbiology Laboratories II. Laboratory Diagnostics of Some Agents – Bordetella pertussis, Bacillus anthracis, Toxoplasma gondiiREVIEW PAPERS

Lucia Maďarová

Hygiena 2007, 52(4):118-125

The application of knowledge of bacterial genetics is no longer a new issue and the domain of research and development centers, being increasingly applied in routine microbiological practice. The introduction of new diagnostic methods, based on principles of molecular biology, to the clinical microbiology laboratories has simplified the identification of etiological agents in examined samples. This fact is especially significant in relation to therapy and in the introduction of efficient epidemiological measures and safety precautions. Using molecular-biology methods it is possible to confirm clinical diagnoses, where other detection methods had failed.

Can Population Ageing Be Associated with Decreased Morbidity?REVIEW PAPERS

Jaroslav Kříž

Hygiena 2007, 52(4):115-117

Mean life expectancy is increasing in a great part of the world and the population is ageing. In developed countries including the Czech Republic, an increase in years lived in good health and, at the same time, a decrease in years lived in disease have recently been observed. This phenomenon is called morbidity compression and is explained by a variety of positive socio-economic changes resulting in a higher level of health care, disease prevention and health promotion. Pessimistic prognosis of uncontrollable growth in health care costs related to population ageing may turn out not to be fully justified.

Methods of Assessing Health-related Quality of Life after MenopausePRESENTED PAPERS

Markéta Moravcová, Jiří Mareš, Josef Donát

Hygiena 2007, 52(3):82-83

Presently, no standardized method as a specific instrument for assessing health-related quality of life after menopause is being applied in Czech clinical practice. In this study three methods are examined to that end - the Utian Quality of Life Scale (UQOL), the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) and the SF-36 health survey questionnaire. UQOL and MRS are being standardized for the Czech female population. Standardization of the Czech version of questionnaires is carried out in practice following "contemplations out loud", reflections of clients and methods of filling them out. The SF-36 is being used as a general method of assessing HRQoL for the rating...

In the National Programme of Education Development the principles of curriculum reform were formulated. Framework education programmes (FEP) define binding education frameworks for particular periods of pre-school, elementary and college education. School education programmes are drawn up by each particular school according to principles given in appropriate FEP. These the school may modify according to its own conditions, character of the region and its specific aims. In FEP for elementary and college education, there are given so-called elementary education areas and cross-sectional themes. In the education area "Man and Health", common for both...
