Selected Population Health Indicators in the Czech Republic - EHES 2014
- Státní zdravotní ústav, Praha, Česká republika
The major objective of EHES (European Health Examination Survey) was to collect up-to-date information on the prevalence of risk factors for chronic diseases in the middle-aged Czech population. Medical examinations which included repeated blood-pressure tests, measurement of anthropometric markers, collection of venous blood for determination of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and glycated haemoglobin were applied to 1220 subjects aged 25-64 years. Hypertension was detected in 47% of men and 26% women. Successful treatment (140/90 mmHg values) was recorded for 47% of men and 66% women. A total of 40% men and 26% women subjects with confirmed hypertension were unaware of the problem. Mean total cholesterol values were 5.3 mmol/l. Total cholesterol levels within acceptable norms (<5.0 mmol/l) were recorded amongst one half of the younger, and merely one third of the older, respondents. Diabetes was detected in 8.6% of men and 5.7% women, obesity in 29% of men and 25% women. High risk of fatal cardiovascular incidents within a ten-year period was detected in 49% of men aged 40-60 years, whereas amongst women this ratio was significantly lower at 18%.
