Burnout in Institutional Care for Elderly People
- Ostravská univerzita, Fakulta sociálních studií, Ostrava, Česká republika
Aim: The aim of the review was to identify and analyze professional and scientific contributions to the issue of burnout syndrome in institutional care for the elderly, and to find out what standardized instruments are used to assess burnout in this area of care.
Methodology: The source of the data obtained during the 2000-2016 period was from licensed and free available electronic databases. Evaluation of collected contributions was performed using the level of evidence specified by Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt. A total of 8 studies was selected for in-depth analysis and post-processing on the basis of established criteria.
Results: For detection of burnout syndrome two standardized instruments were used - Maslach Burnout Inventory and Burnout Measure. Maslach Burnout Inventory revealed that staff caring for the elderly have a moderate degree of emotional exhaustion and low degree of depersonalization and moderate degree of professional accomplishment. According to Burnout Measure, 5.8% to 6.5% personnel in institutional care for the elderly suffered burnout.
Conclusions: Due to the demographic situation and the need to maintain the quality of care early identification of this phenomenon, using standardized tools, is important as well as focus on mental hygiene and appropriate intervention for dealing with burnout syndrome among personnel in institutional care for the elderly.
