Psychosomatic Eating Disorders: Incidence, Risk Factors, Obstacles and Potential in Prevention
- Univerzita Karlova v Praze, 1. lékařská fakulta, Ústav hygieny a epidemiologie, Praha
Anorexia nervosa is a mental dysfunction manifested as multifactor eating disorder. It mainly affects adolescent and young women and leads to starvation and excessive weight loss, with associated complications that affect a number of organ systems. Other eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa and binge eating are clinically less dangerous but equally difficult to manage. This paper examines recent changes in classification of eating disorders and presents a brief review of the clinical picture and epidemiology of their most common forms, with a view to preventive potential and obstacles.
