Obesity is a chronic disease with increased prevalence since the 1960s and is now widespread in not only in developed countries, but developing countries as well. Obesity with its co-morbidities reduces life expectancy and life quality. Treatment and the indirect costs of obesity are increasing. At present there are fresh signs supporting the effectiveness of specific community-based preventive intervention. Existing intervention programmes are based on individual responsibility and active population guidance towards a healthy lifestyle eg. increased physical activity and healthy diet. The primary effort is to make healthy lifestyle choices easily accessible. The article describes current strategies to achieve these ends in the European Union and the Czech Republic.
