Emotional abuse and neglect is a part of the CAN syndrome (Child Abuse and Neglect). Emotional abuse often, if not always, accompanies physical and sexual abuse but may also occur as a distinct entity. Until recently, there has been chaos regarding the definition of emotional maltreatment; its significance has been questioned and consequences have been underestimated. However, lately this phenomenon has been brought to the attention of an increasing number of professionals dealing with children (health professionals, teachers, social workers, police). Based on several existing studies, a generally accepted definition of CAN syndrome was formulated and potential risk factors and consequences of emotional abuse and neglect were identified. The objective of this report is to provide an updated and complete information about this socio-pathological phenomenon including relevant references and resources.
