Metabolic syndrome is a condition characterized by high cardiovascular risk with the potential of promoting the development of type 2 diabetes as well. Project NEMESYS has shown prevalence of metabolic syndrome in 25.6% of ambulatory patients. According to the statistical data showing that the Roma have unhealthy eating habits, higher prevalence of smoking and obesity it can be supposed that the incidence of metabolic syndrome would likewise be higher. The aim of this work has been to determine the occurrence of metabolic syndrome and its risk factors among selected Roma respondents from the county of Rimavská Sobota district and to compare the results with those of the chosen majority respondents from the same locality. 201 Roma and 201 majority respondents took part in the research with identical representation of sex and age. The reported occurrence of metabolic syndrome was 41.3% for the Roma and 24.9% for the majority (P<0.001). The occurrence of other monitored parameters were: abdominal obesity 57.2% and 45.3% (P<0.05), increased triglycerides 51.7% and 36.3 (P<0.01), decreased HDL cholesterol 39.3% and 18.9% (P<0.001), increased blood pressure 45.8% and 53.7% (P>0.05), increased blood sugar level 22.4% and 12.2% (P<0.01) and obesity 29.4% and 18.9% (P<0.05). The higher level of risk factors for metabolic syndrome such as low socio-economical status, smoking, obesity and unsuitable eating habits are statistically significant among the Roma respondents. The occurrence of metabolic syndrome and its risk factors is statistically significantly higher, so that implementation of efficient intervening activities to decrease cardio-metabolic risk factors among the Roma would be of high importance for public healthcare.
