Smoking and Bacterial Infections

Drahoslava Hrubá

The brief overwiev of actual knowledge about enhanced risks of both active and passive smokers' susceptibilities to diseases caused by infectious factors, such as: respiratory tract infections (including tuberculosis), their comorbidity (as otitis media), bacterial diseases in the oral cavity (including periodontitis), sexually transmitted diseases and nosocomial infections. There are acceptable explanations for the biologic plausibility of these associations, supported by experimental studies. The findings are another reason for a comprehensive approach towards controlling the tobacco epidemic.
