The article emphasizes the necessity of standardizing the content and volume of teaching in the fields of hygiene, epidemiology and social medicine in the undergraduate education of medical students in European universities, with reference to "The Future of Hygiene and Public Health in Europe - Needs, Challenges, Strategies and Concepts" symposium, as organised by the Rudolf Schûlke Foundation in Hamburg, November 2007. Our curriculum in the above-mentioned fields at the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, was well received in European context. The author moreover expands on proposals for improving the syllabus in these fields in other European faculties. In his conclusion, he supports a rapid resolution of the overlong efforts to transform the professional structure of the Czech public health service which has, recently, undergone a number of significant changes.
