Assessing the Nutritional Status of the Elderly Hospitalized at a Gerontopsychiatric Ward

The quality of nutrition in old age affects significantly the overall condition of the body, and significant deficits may contribute to multimorbidity in elderly patients. Early detection of malnutrition in old age can avoid worsening functional performance, serious medical complications, increased morbidity, mortality and impaired quality of life. Increasing age is associated with a greater incidence of nutritional disorders, especially with malnutrition. The prevalence of undernutrition in hospitalized geriatric patients is in the range between 30 to 60% and in the long-term institutionalized it reaches 52-85%. Inaccurate assessment and monitoring of nutritional status of older people in healthcare facilities healthcare professionals can have a significant influence on the occurrence of malnutrition during hospitalization. The aim of this paper is to assess the nutritional status of older people in a Gerontopsychiatric department and assess the impact of factors such as depression, cognitive status and level of self-sufficiency on the emergence of malnutrition.
