Human Biomonitoring and its Development on the Domestic and International Levels

The article summarizes the development of human biomonitoring in the Czech Republic, its relationship to biological exposure tests in occupational medicine, utilization of cytogenetic analysis of peripheral lymphocytes for supervision of occupational exposure to genotoxic carcinogens and incorporation of human biomonitoring into the 1994 Environmental Health Monitoring System. The article further describes increased worldwide interest in biomonitoring. Based on the grounding of HBM in the European Environment Health Action Plan during the 2004-2010 period, the EU COPHES project was established with the aim of creating a unified metodology of HBM for EU countries and confirmation of this approach in the DEMOCOPHES pilot study. The Czech and Slovak Republics are participants in these projects.
